Cool Dane. A deluxe one presumes...aceonbass wrote:I have a beat '64 4001. DC193. I've been accumulating parts for it for awhile. I have no desire to spend big money on an original HS, so a RHS will be fine with the aluminum baseplate to make it look a little more authentic.

Actually it's a 4001S. The headstock wings are separating(an easy fix), and the fretboard is quite shrunken and dried out. The fretboard looks a bit thinner than stock and the frets seem awfully skinny to me. I'm going to have the fingerboard planed off and a new one made about 1/16" thicker than stock with new dots and the usual sized frets. The thicker fingerboard should help to keep the neck from bending under the tension of whatever nickel strings I use and also get the action up high enough at the bridge so that I don't have to end up dropping the bridge down all the way on the deck with saddles slotted halfway through.

Re: New Chris squire Bass arrived and theres a problem
Ok all, heres is the conclusion to this chapter. ITS FINALLY DONE AND I HAVE PLAYED IT!!!!!! My luthier friend did all the repairs, set it up and returned it to me. He has set up all my basses, but I think he did something extra special this time.. (he says he just did the usual) It just plays like butta' . I plugged it in and played for about 40 minutes straight... a little "Close to the edge", some "Siberian Khatru" then on to some favorite Rush tunes. All I can say is wow. This is such a nice bass. My ears had sex. Next up is rehearsal on Sunday and I cannot wait. I wil also be having it photographed by my other friend whose pics I have posted here. When they're done I will send those as well.
Thanks to all who helped me get this wonderful bass back in fighting shape.

Re: New Chris squire Bass arrived and theres a problem
I bought a bass of ebay and when I got it the neck was badly warped, none of which was mentioned on the ad, and I gave the seller negative feedback. I bought a new Warmoth neck and the seller gave me the money for the neck in exchange of me changing my neg feedback to pos. I would not worry to much about the broken peice of bakelite, it is a part that is not seen when you are playing, but are your serious that you like the checking on your bass. If I ponyed up the cash for a Chris Squire and it was badly checked and was nopt told about it I would be furious.

If you read the post you would know that the damage to the bakelite was such that the bass was unplayable. The pup was literally floating free, sometimes right up against the strings. Yes I am serious about the checking. Some guys like that and some don't. I believe it adds to the character of an instrument. Too each his own.

I understand the broken bakelite made it unplayable, I read it at the beginning of the thread. But it is a pretty cheap and simple fix, and if you like checking on your Ric that is your own taste. I like my axes to look like the day they were finished at the factory, not will they stay mint, of course not. I have bought used axes before and you never know what you get till it's plugged in and in your hands. Chris Squire is the man. I have on '08 4003.
