this is exactly what im thinking Chris hypothetically if there was a 620 that was ordered from the factory with a extra pickup what indeed would it be called.Im interested to know what it would titled. Why? Cause im a curious cat and i like to know what tag is on my supermarket's counter.
Ha! I too am a fan of NEW and IMPROVED

My guess is that if these (factory) 3-pu guitars exist, they would be called called 620 / 660 SPC given that they were never regular production instruments worthy of their own model designation.

I must say, though - I bet a 666 would SELL

I wish someone who has done this would chime in. I am going to be getting a 620/12 soon and am considering doing this.

Gary Clauson's 620 with middle pickup, perhaps?

I am in the process of doing this myself.

I just picked up a 1991 White BH BT 620 and I am adding an extra black neck pickup from an '86 610 that was butchered and sold on e-bay.
I've got a blank black pickguard with the upper deck trimmed to fit on order from Pickguardian.com. I am also going to add a 5-way to replace the 3-way and put some pull pots in so I can wire it as a normal 2 pickup 620 RIC and like a strat too.

Ultimately I want to preserve as much of the "look" and sound as I can, but make this guitar even more versatile with the tones I should be able to achieve with the alternate wiring.

I'll post pics when it is done and let you know how it sounds.

So far, as it is, I love this guitar. It's absolutely beautiful, has the best action I've had on an electric 6 string and the sound kicks butt!

OK, here she is finally!

So, what do you think?

I think I'll get some new screws for the pickups, just to make it look a bit cleaner. I also need to straighten out the pad under the bridge pickup a little.

Thanks for posting that picture, Jake - I totally missed this thread until now.

As for model number, I tend to favor 620/623 to parallel the 480/483 model designation.

I never gave my $0.02 worth...

As someone who now owns one I like SPC for Special Pickup Choice since it's not a factory thing.

1991 White 620/6 BH BT / SPC Yep, has a nice ring to it.
