I agree. Even Paul sanded it off while he was still a Beatle. If a celeb mods a bass, it's cool. If anyone else does it, it's often considered sacrilege.ricosound wrote:If that was on ebay and not celebrity owned, can you imagine the howls around here - ick

Great Pic's! Did Paul paint it? If not who? Why did he sand it off? What finish does it have now? Where is it?
Thanks,
Glenn

Re: Any Pics of Pauls Psychedelic Ric Bass
I think Paul painted it. He probably sanded it off becuase he realized how bad it looked. It has a sealed natural finish now. Pretty much any early pic of him with Wings shows the bass in it's current state. The C64S is essentially a right handed reproduction of this bass. Never seen a left handed one though.
Re: Any Pics of Pauls Psychedelic Ric Bass
McCartney sanded it because John and George sanded their guitars they had painted. I know of no source where Paul said he sanded it because of how "bad" it looked. He seems pretty happy with it in the ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE broadcast and the HELLO GOODBYE video.
Re: Any Pics of Pauls Psychedelic Ric Bass
I submit that Paul sanded it because it was probably flaking off. George never sanded his "ROCKY" it remains intact to this day. The C 64S represents what the bass looked like after it was sanded after it was originally stripped of the psychedelic paint job.

McCartney sanded his bass so much in some areas that he noticeably changed the contours. Did Rick copy those contours in the reissue?

Yes they did.johnnysain wrote:McCartney sanded his bass so much in some areas that he noticeably changed the contours. Did Rick copy those contours in the reissue?

From different photos it seems he first striped it down to maple, and had the zero fret and white nut installed. At some later time for some reason sanded it more and changed the contour.
Btw, had a fast look through some magazines from ‘70s/’80s, and found a photo of Paul with the Ric before the pickguard was cracked. Text on the photo said it was from the Day Tripper recording session (that would be October 1965). I don’t have a scanner, but when I get my camera back...

Agreed. His bass was stripped while he was still a Beatle. There are photos of it from Let It Be and Abbey Road where it has been stripped and the wings have not been sanded down yet. From the photos I've seen, that extra sanding was done after Ram.Wiker wrote:From different photos it seems he first striped it down to maple, and had the zero fret and white nut installed. Re: Any Pics of Pauls Psychedelic Ric Bass
I do find it a little strange that RIC reissued a bass with the modified contours, since the modification was the result of some extra sanding. They should have reissued the paint job, too!

I thought I read somewhere that RIC offered to seal Paul's bass, but he declined.
Maybe my mammories are failing!

I'll have to disagree Dane. I think it looks great...inspired by acid for sure...drippy & disturbing...pure psychedelia.aceonbass wrote: He probably sanded it off becuase he realized how bad it looked.

Hmm...surely there are differences in 60s aerosol paints and 90s, but the "MMT" paintjob I did on my 4001S-LH over 10 years ago has not FLAKED at all. It has rubbed off a bit in areas where my arm or fingers come in contact with it, but otherwise the finish is fine.simer4001 wrote:I submit that Paul sanded it because it was probably flaking off.
