What kinda P Bass have I been using ?

Post by marc61 »

Right now, this is my only bass guitar.

Seems like it's a genuine USA neck (stamped Feb 1997) but the body is a mystery. Seems like the pots are replacements as well. Even the neckplate looks odd because the stamping is off. Seems to say N414263. I put that Babicz bridge on there. Love this bass. The tone is terrific. I get compliments after gigs on how solid it sounds through my rig.

Neckplate serial number suggests USA-made in '94-95.

yes, but the neck is definitely 97 and if it was a 94 body, I believe it should be string through

Yep - I was trying to do some more digging in the meantime without much luck - all I can say right now is that the 'guard is either aftermarket or a '62 RI??? It looks like it needed new mounting holes around the bottom of the control rout so that suggests a mismatch between the current 'guard and the original (e.g. US vs MIJ or MIM vs MIJ). Need to ponder a bit more - the large additional neck pocket hole, if original, is key....

Are you selling this bass? Or did you post this thread in the wrong place?

Real F neckplate for sure but the stamping is bootleg. Fender never used that typeface or crooked stamping or an N. Refin-ed body also looks suspect, though possibly Fender Mexico. Not Fender's style of routing. Non Fender pots and cap too. Hard to tell with the neck without a headstock close-up front and back, but it's either import or real Fender Mexico. Repro tort guard. Nice 60's look though!

I'm thinking it's a USA neck with some type of replacement body.Odds and ends harness...but I should have taken pics of the pickup. Maybe I can do that tomorrow and get some headstock photos too
