Shipping a guitar

Post by DavidW »

Does bubblewrap react with Rickebacker guitar finishes? I've got to ship out a 620 tomorrow; I was going to bad it with bubble wrap and wrap the headstock / neck in newspaper. Then I'll put the form fitting case in a box surrounded by peanuts. What do you guys think?

I get a polka-dotted Rick sent in about once a month. Although bubble pack is low-density polyethylene ( LDPE), and is theoretically non- reactive, it does trap moisture between itself and the surface of the instrument. It can also leach wax out of the paint.

I don't like any paper products to come into contact with the paint finish. Even Kleenex is abrasive, and newspaper can wear a corner down to the wood in one short trip.

Wrap it in t-shirts instead. Use them for padding, too.
