The Church

Post by tomt3 »

I saw the Church @ the Park West in Chicago on Feb. 11th. They played 3 full albums in their entirety: "Untitled #23", "Priest=Aura", and "Starfish". Marty Willson-Piper played a jetglo 370 almost all night, ocasionally giving way to a rick 4-string. It was a great show, and I believe this is a brief tour- highly recommended for anyone who digs this band.

Best band ever. I have never seen anyone carve up a 12 stringer like Marty Willson-Piper.

Seems like there might be a few "Church" fans here.
My buddy Robert Walker runs Heyday which distributes Marty's work and books him locally. Here's his site if you're looking for Martys new stuff:

Oh man, they played "Starfish" in its entirety?! Wowza. That is definitely a peak album (though not necessarily the only one) for the Church. Would be killer to have heard the whole thing live. I've heard most of it live, but it flows nicely on CD in order.

I'm looking back at a program they handed out at the gate. Looks like the whole tour was 11 dates in 9 cities, concluding on the 22nd in Atlanta. Hopefully its a teaser of things to come.

I saw The Church in '88 at a Dallas club. They sounded great, but my buddy pointed out he'd never seen a more bored band play live, ever. I agreed...then!

Well I'm sad now! I missed this. I wanted to see this show, but forgot about it.

I met Marty at the Rick 75th party. Nice Guy. Likes Guinness!

I snoozed, I lost!

Well, if he likes Rickenbackers AND Guinness, I'm sure we'll all get along famously.

A few of us locals met him and fellow "Moon Maiden"Tiare at NAMM `09; super great people, both of them. Marty still knows all of the serial numbers of all his Ricks, including the one that some dirtbag stole from him.
