72 Azure.......

Post by henry5 »

So here it is. I meant to do this earlier but have been dealing with some upsetting personal news in the last week and a half so just haven't got round to it.

When it arrived I feared the worst; the box may as well have been an oversized breakfast cereal box and was bashed in in a couple of places. When I got the case out it was partly unlatched and when I opened it one of the strings was off its post. I needn't have worried; I put on a set of my regular 40-95 Rotos (think the strings on it were well-used Elixirs), did an approximate string height adjustment and the neck settled in nicely. I'll get it pro-tweaked when the time comes. The neck is almost exactly the same as my other '72, which is my favourite Ric neck. The weight is great; it's no heavier (and maybe actually lighter than) my other.

It sounds great; very "vintage-Ric", more like my main 72 then either the 21 fretter or the PW '73, although it still has a little of that upper-mid emphasis that skunkers always seem to have IMO. It actually just gives it a sufficiently different personality to make it more than simply a backup, which is great (shame I'm still struggling to play at the moment!).

As some will know, I've been after an original Azure with these features for approximately 17 years, so I'm over the moon about this. The missing binding and the damper will be replaced in due course; I want it to keep its character so the rest of the original binding will stay.

The upsetting news that we had concerns our beloved cat Amber, who has been through a lot in the past couple of years including radioactive iodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. The day after the Azure arrived I took her for her regular checkup and the vet found a tumour in her mouth. If there are any animal lovers out there I'd be grateful for any prayers/positive thoughts; we love her as much as any family member.

Here she is playing tech to my main '72, LB.

Thanks Scott, that really means a lot. The Azure doesn't even begin to make up for the news; I'd get rid of both basses (and everything else I own) in a heartbeat if I thought it would make any difference.

BTW, in the pictures with Amber LB has a Sergio treble pickup in it, which was replaced with the original once I had some new magnets added.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart guys. Sometimes the joy of a new bass is depressingly short lived...

Prayers, and best wishes Shaun. We have two cats in our family, and we lost a very young dog not long ago. I know how much they mean to us, as they become a part of our lives. The basses are beautiful.

That 72 Azure has inspired me to sell my 64 Fender Precision and find my own 70s Azure. We had 3 cats that all lived to be 18 years old before they left. They were major family members. All the best to your fuzzy friend.

Your Amber looks just like my Sable. She will be in my thoughts and prayers.

And great score on the bass! Congrats!

One of our beloved cats had to take a last trip to the vet..
She had dementia, complete kidney failure, and epilepsy and still loved to purr up a storm.
She was at the stage where she kept getting lost, while still in sight of you (and she would cry)
The fits and kidney failure meant that her quality of life was about done.
We were so sad and there was not a dry eye in the house...

Anyhow congrats on the 72 in one of my favorite colours!
