Should I sell a kidney and get this 4005?

Post by gibsonlp »

Hi guys,
Not really, I can keep my kidney but I am really out of GAS money...
If you remember I was looking for a 4005 on my previous visit to the states, I wanted a mint/near mint one from the mid/late sixties preferably in fireglo and all original.
Here is a really nice example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0540881070
I might be able to offer a lower price, but even if I do I don't think it would be much below 9K which is more than I can actually spend at the moment.
I am facing this dilemma as I am building a new house, by buying this bass I will basically dig into my spare money (which is an extra money I am keeping aside for unexpected expenses after taking into consideration the most conservative building costs estimate I got from the people who will build it (that is - their highest estimate)).
I don't feel I need a 4005 at the moment and in fact - I don't even have a room for it in my current (very small) house!

My logic tells me to wait with it for at least a year until the house will be ready and then I'll know if it's "safe" to buy it.
My heart (and surprisingly enough - my wife!) tell me - get it, pricing only go up and you might not be able to see another 4005 in such a mint condition in the near future.

What do YOU say?

Thanks for letting me share.
So long and thanks for all the fish!

I think it's fine to wait right now. A lot of people are out of gas money these days. Life just has us that way sometimes. It just makes the next new bass all the sweeter. I think you should celebrate your housewarming with a 4005. 8)

I saw that one, really really nice !! Some people would risk house and home and some nuts even a kidney for this fine example  , but for me a safe house would be the first thing to go for, but if you really have the spare money it's a good chance to get it NOW !

I think so too. I don't know about pricing going up or down but I do know it's been a looooong time since we've seen one this clean. Assuming it's not a refin.

I always think of "The Stone Roses" when I think of the 4005. Now THAT one is (was) nice too

At the same time, we only have one life to live.... and that 4005 is simply one of the best looking bass I ever seen !!!! Maybe you can sell a bass so it reduces the costs, just an idea. I know it is hard to depart from a Ric Bass !!! Good luck !

I'd wait, Gil, those "standard" 4005s are a dime a dozen! Build the house, first. 8)

You don't need to sell a kidney. Just go rob a bank...

Or, you could wait. Some day, one will come up for sale again, and a house, especially if it has room for the new bass is probably more important...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Being married to a passionately crazy Scots-Irish girl I have already bought and continue to own two homes (we rent one out). I can tell you this for sure, you can always use some spare cash when home renovation is concerned, and I'll bet it's similar when building.

I'd hold off, but that's just my two cents.

You could probably get one in slightly less perfect condition for a spleen.

Go with your first instinct Gil. If that means passing this one up..........so be it.

A gall bladder would get you a restorable carcass.

But, then it would cost an arm and a leg to restore...
