8-Saddle 4008 Bridge Slotting

Post by aceonbass »

Since I've modded and set up several 4003/4's as 8-strings, I'm also set up to slot Kevin's new 8 saddle bridges for the 4008 basses. Besides slotting each of the saddles for the appropriate string gauge using precision nut files, I also enlarge the bridge height adjusting pockets in the tailpiece for the larger screws in Kevin's bridge. Shown is the standard 4-saddle bridge on my 4008CS. Interested parties can contact me via PM for further details.

I just finished slotting one of Kevin T's new Ricky 8-saddle bridges for a customer. Very nicely machined part. The aluminum saddles polish up much better than the stock zinc ones. Since this bridge was designed to accept 8/32" height adjusting screws and the customer didn't want to drill out their tailpiece to accept them, I had to turn one end of the screws down to fit the smaller pockets.

I didn't get one of Kevin's 8-string bridges. These are all for customers.

Nice job, Dane!

I do have one bridge left (+ the one I was keeping for myself).

Unless Kevin decides to do another run of these, you'd better get one while you can. It's a nice piece and there's nothing out there like it for a 4003 if ya gotta have eight individual saddles. This would work well for a 12-string bass too with the proper modifications to the tailpiece

I have no plans on doing an 8 again, though I may do a couple 4's that would fit in the old aluminum tailpiece or some 5's for conversion's with Mr. Hall's blessing.

TOO FUNNY Dane, I DID have "I'll have to talk to Dane for help on this one" but felt it a bit, well you know.....presumptuous. So I deleted it.

It might be a very distinct possibility.

The Mrs and I were listening to this song on the car radio the other day....

and Janey asked me "Is that an 8 string bass?"

I was FLOORED....NEVER in my life did she give me such a GREAT OPENING!
Even better, she asked me how much it might cost to either GET ONE or even better, CONVERT one of the RIC's I'm really not using a lot.

Now, this is NEW territory for me....and to me, I hear TERROR in that word! I've never been one to do irreversible mods...but thinking about it....it kinda makes sense, IF done correctly.

NOW, I have to go back and THOROUGHLY read all those 8 String Conversion threads.

Dane, just out of curiosity, any idea what the TOTAL cost would be to do this CORRECTLY? Like you did with your 8 string CS? NO 4-2-8 string jobs for me. IF I were to do it, it would have to be done correctly like you did on yours, extended headstock and all.

I wish I could play one before even considering this, but like all things RIC...availability is always an issue.
