Grover -> Kluson conversion?

Post by faustus »

Hi folks, i have a 1981 360/6 with Grover "pat pend" tuners. I am trying to figure out if i can put on Kluson-style tuners without making any surgery to the head (exept one small screw hole at the bottom plate). Anyone tried this?

I believe Grovers require a larger hole than the Klusons, so you'd need 'conversion' bushings to make them fit. StewMac has a couple.

I am having the same job done on a 360 from 1973. My tech, who's doing the job, said he'll probably need to put in wooden plugs and drill new, smaller holes in order to fit the (smaller) Klusons. That's fine with me, as the guitar is JG anyway. IMO, the Grovers are simply too fat for the slim headstock (slimmer on this model than on most other 70's headstocks).

Best wishes,

I can understand that one reason for changing is the fit on a slimmer neck may be better, but IMO the Grovers hold tune a lot better - I have them on all my Gibson and have no tuning issues at all.
