I clearly remember those phones; I began making phone calls that same year (1954) and had no idea until now that that was the Year of the Dial. I always thought it was sometime in the late 1940s.
The exchange names were just like street names back then--presidents, geographical, neighborhood references, botanical and animal, and so on.
I lived in Humboldt Park back then and our exchange was HU-6 XXXX (for Humboldt). My parents had that number for 14 years. Then, in 1960, we moved to Logan Square, where it became COrnelia 7, later 267-XXXX. They had this number for 43 years!
I have trouble recalling their latest number. Fortunately it's in my iPhone's directory...
