What strings and picks do you like to use with your Ric?

Post by 08 Ric 4003 »

I like Dean Markley Blue Steel gauge 45 to 100. I want to try the legendary Rotosound 66 swings, but they are bloody expensive. Picks I like Dunlop Tortex 1mm. The blue ones. I am also cheap and use Grolsch pop-top beer gromets for my strap locks. You can't beat drinking a beer and getting a strap lock to boot. Off the subject I love Yes and Chris Squire anyone know how he makes that Harmonized Ric sound on Tormato. Is it a combo of effects, one effect, studio magic, or a bass modification?

RS88s Tru Bass with fender stubby pick.I use low tension strings due to the vintage of my bass.If tension isn't an issue then Roto 66 Swing is the way to go.

GHS Precision Flat light guage strings and Dunlop .73mm gray nylon picks. I used to use a pick about 75% of the time and play finger style the other 25% but now it's about 50/50.

It varies for me whether I use fingers of a pick. I like both, they both have advantages.

DA Chrome ECB-81 on the 4003FL and Rickenbacker Electro 4440 on the 4001FL. No picks.
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Pretty plain Jane here. On the Jan '73 4001 FG, Thomastik Jazz flats and on the '97 V63FG, a set of original NOS Maxima/Ric flats from the mid 70s. Fender Medium tort picks on both when picking.

Most of my Ricks have the D'Addario EXL-170 set on them. A couple have the EPS-170 set, the 5 stringers have the XLS-170/5 set. My 4001FL and and Fireglo 4004Cii have D'Addario Chromes.

Mainly a fingerstyle player, I use a pick only for a few songs. When I do use a pick, it's this one. It's a great bass guitar pick.

Stock strings (Curt Mangan POR as a substitute), felt picks, fingers, and the occasional Golden Gate thumbpick. Depends on the tune.

I just discovered the joy of DA Chromes on my '93 V63. The bass is now a joy to play. For rounds I use DA EXL-170 or Detroit Strings steels.

DR Lo Riders (Shadow), TI Jazz Rounds ('73 4001), Fender nickel-plated rounds (4003S), Jim Dunlop Nylon 1mm picks, sometimes Carol Kaye's extra-heavy white picks.

Hi Joel,

As you asked, I currently use:
'74 4000: GHS Boomers 45 - 105
'74 4001: Ernie Ball slinky roundwounds 40 - 95
'72/3 Frankenrick 4001: TI 344 Jazz flats
'00 V63: D'addario XL 165 (45 - 105)

As you can see, brand loyalty is not my thing...

Picks - Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm (Purple).

As to your Squire question - I wish I knew!

Rotosound 66s and DR FatBeams, both in standard guages. I'm odd with picks, I use the blue Sharkfins and hold them backwards using the serrated edge to strike the strings with.

That's probably worthy of a thread in it's own right, fabulous sound! Although I think it's been asked before (have a search) but with no definitive answers.
