GHS Bass Boomers 45-130. Some kind of multicolored heavy picks.
It's too early in the morning to talk about our relationship !

Rotosound 77 (.040 - .100) strings + fingers normally. When I use a pick it is yellow triangle Tortex (0.73mm). I rarely use roundwound strings but when I use, they're DR Low Riders (stainless steel .045 - .105).

I wasn't trying to insult anyone who uses a pick. I've never used them and never will. It's not a personal attack on anyone. It's just my preference. We all have strong opinions here. And assuming that a bass player is ignorant to the existence of one of the most influential rock bassists of all time is disrespectful and petty.

Guys, let's not make what was a friendly and fun thread go sour. Let's get back to the topic at hand.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!
Re: What strings and picks do you like to use with your Ric?
Who cares how we play them,we all play Rickenbacker basses and that's all that matters. This is a great Forum I have learnt a lot from everyone that I've spoke to here, & had really bad GAS after looking at some of your basses.
Re: What strings and picks do you like to use with your Ric?
I'd forgotten the Chris squire Vid. I still have the original on tape - but no tape player
I've just tried his technique and for sure you get the harmonic exactly as he describes, but only on the downstroke obviously. I can't see how he used that technique for the faster riffs.
On myself, went for the Rotosound R66LD originally, but then switched to 60% fingerstyle for a long while and now i cant go back to steel strings as they just feel too tough for fingerstyle. I now compromise with the sister set in Nickel, RS66LDN.
Pick, Sharkfin Regular, the white one. No idea why i started with that, but i've never changed and I can't play with anything stiffer at all. I just like the way it bends quickly over the strings like there is nothing in the way.

Seems like there are quite a few Rotosound guys. One day I will plop down $25 bucks or so and get at set. I tried what were supposed to be Dean Markley's copy of them, the Super Rounds. I hated them when I first put them on, and then by day three they broke in and feel good after that. DM stopped making them so I switched to the Blue Steels. One thing I think is cool but trivial is that Dean Markley's HQ is back in the Bay Area of California in a place called Santa Clara. I grew up in San Jose which is right next door.

What's the difference between Tortex and Ultex? (Local music shops only sell Tortex so I can't just go there and buy Ultex and test.)rickenbrother wrote:Most of my Ricks have the D'Addario EXL-170 set on them. A couple have the EPS-170 set, the 5 stringers have the XLS-170/5 set. My 4001FL and and Fireglo 4004Cii have D'Addario Chromes.
Mainly a fingerstyle player, I use a pick only for a few songs. When I do use a pick, it's this one. It's a great bass guitar pick.

I have both tortex and ultex picks in my pick box. Tortex are different colors and not to hard or soft. Ultex are like a opaque yellow and they are a little stiffer. I use the .73 ultex when I play the six strings every once and a while, but with the six strings I prefer the .73 tortex which are lemon yellow.. I also like the dunlop .71with the alligator on them. For my basses I like the Tortex 1mm, and sometimes a 1.14 mm. The dunlop delrin pick are good to but a lot softer. The gauge I like is pink. Thanks dunlop for that.

Is it really so difficult from finland to go to a german webshop like saitenkatalog.de and order several pick's to test?mikko wrote:What's the difference between Tortex and Ultex? (Local music shops only sell Tortex so I can't just go there and buy Ultex and test.)

Fender 9050CL's for both the '10 4003 & '08 4003FL & my fingers on both, but I do go in for Dunlop Tortexs in 1.0 & 1.14 mm & Dunlop Gators in 2.0 mm for certain stuff. I find them all easy to hang on to, last forever and really give me a clear, direct sound.

Re: What strings and picks do you like to use with your Ric?
These would work just and well for me, maybe even better, but I have not seen them in any of my local music stores. Only in the conventional pick shape. 99% of the music stores where I live (believe it or not) in the So Cal area are NOT accessory friendly for bassists. Everything under the sun is available for guitarists, very little, almost nothing for bassists. The Tortex have more of a very fine sandpaper feel, where the Ultex have a smoother feel, but the type of plastic it's made from has a good co-efficiency of friction, so you still have a good grab on the pick.mikko wrote:What's the difference between Tortex and Ultex? I like the shape which gets into the heavier strings of bass guitars better. Works well for my 5% of playing time (at most) for pick use.

anybody else
when the interviewer asked his first question? Chris was saying some great stuff, but I couldn't keep it together with that guy asking the questions. May that hair rest in peace.
