Oh my, what a lovely fretless. I would welcome the HS in one of these. The nature of an upright bass is very skewed toward the treble and mid-range side of things. Paul, that is a brilliant gem.

Paul, I've been excited to see this project since you told me about it when we met. It looks fantastic and very metal. I like the matte/gloss contrasting. How does it sound?

On the side discussion, besides hardware, If you are going to do the Blackest of the Black No. 1 versions of a bass, shouldn't it have an ebony fretboard and some of those black DR extras?

...The best way to achieve the finish is to get cadmium plated hardware and strip it with muriatic acid before dumping it into the blackening solutions. If you do this at home, make sure you do it in a ventilated area, as the by product of cadmium stripping is essentially cyanide gas. Don't ask me how I know this.

That's a fun reaction. Have a smoke if you can while doing this, too (as long as there are no flammable vapors in the area). This is from Organic Syntheses, Coll. Vol. 1, p.314 (1941):

"Gattermann(1) recommends that the operator smoke during the preparation, for he found that a trace of hydrogen cyanide is sufficient to give the tobacco smoke a highly characteristic flavor. This preliminary warning is useful in case of leaky apparatus or a faulty hood." reference 1 is Gattermann, Ann. 357, 318 (1907).

Anyway, it can sensitize you to the almondy flavor from HCN (makes it kinda metallic too). I ran some reactions for my graduate work that generated HCN. At least, that was the reason for the cigar if anyone asked. I could trap it and worked in an actively ventilated fume hood, which is ideal. But, since you've recently posted, you must be doing just fine.
