I remember that episode... used to really dig the song when I was a kid. I think it had some kind of Latin vibe going.s4001 wrote:

Re: Favorite Bassists
For me, Dee Murray was THE player who got me interested in playing bass, all others are a distant second.
Those others being: Chris Squire, John Entwistle, and Tom Petersson.
I'm the proud owner of Dee's Steinberger bass, heard on several EJ albums/hits from Dee's return to the EJ Band in the 80s.

Re: Favorite Bassists
I always liked
Phil Kennemore from Y&T <----meat & potatoes player with great backround vocals.
Stuart Hamm <----Love him or hate him the guy can play, and leaves it all on the stage.
Carl Radle <------Huge Talent!!!
Eddie Jackson <------More for tone than talent.
Michael Anthony <------I know bass purists think he is untalented, Mike's got groove, try listening the Van Halen without him....NOT GOOD!
Marcus Miller <------Do I really need to explain it?
Besides the obvious Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, John Entwhistle, Paul McCartney.....Etc

Re: Favorite Bassists
It is all who you like. The thread if favorite not most talented. Good to see there has been no bashing going on. Good list. I saw Elton in 85 or 86 when he toured for Leather Jackets. Not one of his more stellar releases, but man did he rock. He did three encores. Saturday Saturday Saturday nights all right.
Re: Favorite Bassists
Michael Anthony can drive a beat with his right hand like nobody's business. Most bassist's would just play steady 1/8 notes with a pick, which doesn't sound all that smooth, but it's much harder to keep it up and sound as steady and driving as Michael does with his fingers. That Eddie replaced him with his weak dough-boy of a son without even calling him, was a classless move.light_my_lucky wrote:Michael Anthony <------I know bass purists think he is untalented, Mike's got groove, try listening the Van Halen without him.....NOT GOOD!

But I do recall seeing a video of Michael Anthony doing a bass "solo" during a concert. It sounded like an elephant dying.

He was well-loved because of all the money he gave away for John Beresford Tipton, too.

+1. I (rather unfortunately) saw that "solo" being performed live. Great bassist, not a great soloist.NFB-418 wrote:Too true.aceonbass wrote:

Later in the show Eddie musically wanked for 18 minutes. At least Michael's "solo" came to a quick, merciful end.
