Rush - Moving Pictures 30th Anniversary
Feb. 7th, 1981 - Rush releases their album, "Moving Pictures".
This album, for me, represents the pinnical of bass tone. 30 years later, it is still my favorite album. Every track is a classic, with the magic sound of Geddy's Rickenbacker 4001 propelling many of the songs. A genuine masterpiece that has stood the test of time.
Moving Pictures and 2112 were life-changing albums for me - they are the reason why I started playing bass, and the reason why I play Rickenbacker basses.

Wow, has it really been 30 years?
I remember that concert, I was college at the time, saw them in Indianapolis, IN. And I agree, Geddy's Rick sound was fantastic!

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

"Moving Pictures" was/is their watershed LP for sure.
Although the LP is Fender Jazz-heavy, I don't mind that at all for I like his Jazz sound too....my favorite album of all-time, bar none. It is why I bought my 1st 4001 in 1980.
While the Rickenbacker was still King for live performances at that time, IMHO his golden Rick period in the studio was "Hemispheres" and "Permanent Waves", and some of "Signals".

I saw that tour at the old Boston Garden. Loved the Red Barchetta video!

Agreed. MP is, bar none, the greatest Rush album of all time. It is the perfect blend of rock, pop and prog and a timeless sound. It sounds nothing like other records released in 1981. So good. Apart from the rather (IMHO) heavy handed and somewhat stilted "Witch Hunt," every track is a standout. Amazing tone, great songs, just a fantastic album.
That said, I do like many of their other records as well -- 2112, Hemispheres, and Farewell especially.

Hey all --
Here I am harping on this some more, but I just wanted to share the "Classic Albums" session on both 2112 and Moving Pictures. It's in at least 7 parts on youtube. Lots of Geddy with his Ric and just a fascinating documentary on these two watershed records.

Oddly, I think Witch Hunt is one of the better (of the unappreciated) Rush songs and flows right into Vital Signs well on the album. It's probably my second favorite song on that album. But... I'm odd that way.slimpickens wrote:Agreed. MP is, bar none, the greatest Rush album of all time. It is the perfect blend of rock, pop and prog and a timeless sound. Interestingly, when I first started playing bass I didn't know what a Rickenbacker was and didn't care who played them.
It was after I got my first Rickenbacker 20 years ago that I learned Geddy used one. Go figure...

neat to see rush jamming to their own tunes on that dvd as if we were learning the songs ourselves way back when.

On this tour they play the entire Moving Pictures in order to open the second set. I saw them last year. It was my sixth show. I saw the Moving Pictures Tour, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, 30th Anniversary and Time Machine. The two spoofs are hilarious before each set. First Rush song I ever hears The Spirit Of Radio and sill my fav.

Re: Rush - Moving Pictures 30th Anniversary
Rush from 2112 to Pictures they were on fire. The first three albums were damn good and have many great songs. They started to slip at around Power Windows or maybe even Signals and then they really started to slip but Snakes was a damn fine album. From about Signals to Test For Echo each album had a song or two that I enjoyed. What killed Rush for me in that period was Geddy became a keyboard player first and a bassist second. I went to see them though the years cause they are great in concert, but to watch Geddy stand by his synths with his bass on and play the keys more that thump the strings made me a bit miffed.
