Chris Wood of MM&W is pretty awesome. Saw them here at the Ogden a few months ago. He rocked an older P Bass, an upright, and a Hofner. Man, he even made that Hofner sound good (I didn't know they could go beyond "thump thump")! I was really impressed. His upright tone was ear-shattering (in a good-but-bad-for-your-health sort of way). The coolest part is, he's obviously a great player, but he never sacrifices tasty grooves in order to be flashy.

No but I used to "forget" to bring my bass for lessons so I'd have to use his prototype. Ironically, I saw the very same bass for sale on Ebay once and was tempted to go for it as I had fond memories of the bass

Has some mentioned Percy Jones from Brand X? I was just listening to Do They Hurt? He can tear it up.

I know Percy, he was my first influence on fretless, made me rip the frets out of a '72 Telecaster Bass when Unorthodox Behavior came out. I saw Brand X a couple times in the '70s, and the current reincarnation, Tunnels, a bunch of times; my former jazz fusion band did a double bill gig with them a few years ago in Baltimore. Percy's a really nice guy and great to talk with; the last time we got to see each other we mostly talked about aging.

I have had the opportunity to play the basses of two of my favorite fretless bassists, Percy, and Gary Willis; Percy's action was quite high and made his bass difficult to play, Gary's was so low his bass was difficult to play. See a pattern, here?

Yes. They both must be very friendly people to let you play their instruments.

Another lesser-known band featuring a very fine bassist in Alan Spenner was The Grease Band.

Spenner laid down the lines on the original Jesus Christ Superstar (the real one w/ Ian GIllan) and man did he rip it. That was the first work I ever learned on bass as I was switching from guitar to bass in 1980. Quite the indoctrination.

The liner notes with my CD also list Peter Morgan, Alan Weighall, and Jeff Clyne as playing bass guitars, but there is no distinction on who played on which songs. I love that album and it was my first introduction to Ian Gillan.

My top three favorite players are currently:

McCartney
Deacon
Murray

and the next three spots would be filled in some order (haven't really decided yet) by Jones, Bruce, and, (I have to say it...) Cetera.

All good choices. And there is NOTHING wrong with mentioning Peter Cetera. I really dig his work on the first few Chicago albums, particularly CTA, II, and VII (well, the first, jazzy disc anyway).

I'll take this opportunity to mention Mike oldfield again, as I enjoy his work with Kevin Ayers.

Boy Howdy!
Mr. Jones can play! I saw them in 1977. Excellent! (Brand X was one of the best things ole Phil Collins ever did.) Percy is so tasty and clever. But don't forget the marvelous work that Percy did on the various early Brian Eno solo CDs. (Of course, Eno did some cutting and pasting so Percy sounds even more nimble than he really was!)
