Does ric sell precut nuts?

Post by johnashfield »

Does anyone know if RIC sells precut nuts? Or just the nut blanks?

Is there much of a tonal difference between a bone nut and the bakelite RIC uses?

John,

I bought a nut for a 4003 via Rosetti in the UK and it came precut.....not sure if it's the same with all models though.

Tonal differences between different nut materials wil only be apparrant when playing open strings...not sure how much of a difference between bone and nut...someone here will know though.

Nut material makes a difference on fretted strings too. I don't remember the technical reasons but my luthier even puts brass nuts on his custom built fretless basses. I personally like RIC's ABS or Delrin pre-cut bass nuts.

Were brass nuts considered just a fad during the 70's? I bought my '76 4001 used with a brass nut on it. I don't see much of brass nuts anymore. Just curious.

Alembics and other high end basses still come with them. I think they are a bit labor intensive which is why you don't see them much these days. It was the first mod I had done when I got my first two 4001's along with a set of RotoSound rounds.

I think that brass nuts were more popular in the 70s ... my '78 4001 came with one, but I've never seen one on a more recent instrument (don't really hang with Alembics and other high-end models, though).
My basses are Rickenbackers. My synthesizers and recording gear are analog.

I am about to start up my tile saw (with small diameter blade) soon, and I would like some kind of answer to this question. I have some m**se bone to cut into blanks and cure in white gas. I was going to do this anyway for my acoustic guitars that I am building, but while I am at it, perhaps I should consider doing this mod. to the 360/12 I have. I am familiar with the brass nut. I have one in combination with the bone backin on the '71 Les Paul Deluxe I own, and it increases the sustain somewhat, I find. No need for that these days with signal processing, I guess?
