Pickup installation

Post by fireglo »

I installed a pickup in my Les Paul (bridge position), but I didn't cut the wires to length. I just trimmed the insulation at the end and made the connections to the volume pot. I've been getting noise when the guitar moves across my body or when I rub my hand on the back of the guitar. Is this because I left too much wire length? I know I should have trimmed off the excess, but I wasn't sure I would keep the pickup.

One of the first things my guitar tech does with a Les Paul is replace all of the copper wiring with silver wire. According to her, the copper wire acts as an antenna. She uses adhesive aluminum foil for shielding and always zip ties extra pickup wire to itself so it stays out of the way. The extra pickup wireing is probably not the problem. Where and how you grounded the pickup could be a problem.
