The 4 or 5 solo albums Eno did after he left Roxy Music were awesome. Fripp does some smoking finger work on Baby's On Fire. I believe John Wetton slapped the bass on it too.

Thanks for the photo!
When I saw the band (twice actually that summer), John Goddsall had recently broken his hand so he was not present. (And I forgot who was drumming for them on that tour but of course it wasn't Phil.) Because of Godsall's absence, Percy was able to be even more melodic and adventurous. I have some slides somehere...I should try and dig them out.
(When I think of that situation I often think of Spinal Tap...the scene when the band is without the guitarist so they do the "jazz odyssey" jam! And truly, it really was the case...they basically just jammed.)

The first time I saw Brand X, at the Cleveland Agora, John was fine and played his butt off, the second time, at Bogart's in Cincinnati, he was there but his arm was in a sling! The first time I saw Tunnels John played with them, too. 8) :D

Kenwood Dennard was the touring drummer in Brand X both times I saw them, but I had seen Phil many times with Genesis by that time, every time they came to Cleveland, from April '72 (their first US tour, as an opening act for It's A Beautiful Day) through the Wind & Wuthering tour, (seven times, IIRC).

Oh, JPS, now I am really jealous!
Brand X and all the early Genesis shows? Dang!
Even though I was in NYC from 1969 onward I was just 10 in '69 so I missed so many historic concerts. My first real show (Harry Chapin sorta doesn't qualify) was Genesis in 1976. So I got Billy Bruford AND Phil Collins. (And just to keep this semi-on-thread, Mike Rutherford was amazing! What killed me about him was that not only did he cover all the parts--bass and 12-strings--so well but he also almost always had his eyes closed and his head tipped back in a meditative way.)
I feel those early Genesis shows must have been magical. I still remember the radio ads (on the famous WNEW-FM) for the Lamb tour...I was just barely aware of their stuff then because WNEW didn't play much of them until 1976-77. Sure wish I had gone!
Anyway...it is cool to hear of your experience!
Now, back to our regularly scheduled Favorite Bassists thread...

I always loved Renaissance's bassist. He had that Rick sound/lead bass thing going and really impressed me...I actually got to see them in 1976 at my catholic HIGH SCHOOL!

That was the Trick Of The Tail tour. I saw both nights that they did at Music Hall :D (I won't tell you that the first night was thanks to Phil for giving me a backstage pass for the show 8) ).

Jon Camp is my #1 bassist. I saw Renaissance in '79 during the Azure d'Or tour, and met with Annie & Jon after the show for a nice talk. 8) I first heard them in '74 and have been a fan of their music, since.

Ok, you are getting me angry! (Lol!)
What a cool thing to have been a guest of Phil! He had the perfect balance that tour because he was...nervous.
He took his singing AND his drumming very seriously and did an excellent job on both. He was very keen on presenting the new material (Trick) in the best light and also wanted to prove himself on the old tunes. He did a fine job. (He did another great job on the 1977 tour as well but then...well...that is for another Thread!)

And meeting with Annie & Jon? Color me jealous!

What I have seen on this Forum (unlike almost any other music Forum) is that folks here are often "connected" but never flaunt it or name-drop to impress. It seems that everyone is simply passionate about music in general and Ricks in particular.

Thanks for all the cool info.

Next favorite bassist:
Mark Egan. His work with Pat Metheny is so tasty...love his TONE!

I only got to see Mark Egan once, when I saw Larry Coryell at a local jazz nightspot called Night Town, in Cleveland Heights. I have most of Mark's solo work and that of Elements, his band with Danny Gottlieb, who I have seen with Pat Metheny a few times and at a drum clinic. I have seen Pat (I have also seen his flugelhorn playing brother, Mike, perform) a few times with his band in the early to mid '80s; the first time I saw Metheny was on Joni Mitchell's Shadows & Light tour, (now don't start throwing things at me  ) with Lyle Mays, Don Alias, Michael Brecker, and Jaco Pastorius! :D :D :D :D :D

I am fortunate in that I have been able to see most of my favorite bassists perform live. 8)

OK.....I'll play too.......

My most favorite and influential bassists are Chris Squire, and John Entwistle.
I am, and feel SO fortunate to have seen both of them perform on numerous occasions....AND had the chance to meet and talk with them.

Jeff Scott mentioned Percy Jones earlier in this thread. MANY years ago I had the opportunity to see him perform at a small club here in New Jersey. I met him as well. At the time he was playing a WAL bass-----that was my introduction to WAL guitars.

I don't know whether I or someone else mentioned him previously in the thread, but here is another favorite of mine:
