stereo cord

Post by fab49er »

i am newer to Ric (maple 4003). i am interested in using the stereo cord. I use a effects box on the neck pu with my compressor on the bridge pu. two heads two cabs. All is fine.
I have a small room gig coming up. in order to use only one head and cab i bought a Two Mono Jack to One mono Jack adapter allowing the two stereo cord end to plug into one input of my head.
Problem is ... both pickups wont work , isolated to the effects box. i tried another effects box, and the same thing happened.
QUESTION:
(1) did anyone have this same problem??
(2) i wonder ... can i use both heads (which everything works) and plug both amps into on speaker cab. will i blow something up?
(3) i imagine i can switch to a Two Channel head ?? (will definately try before i buy)

If I understand this correctly, you have a cable with a stereo plug plugged into the Ric-o-sound jack on the bass, and the other end of the cable has two mono plugs, one for each pickup. The plug for the neck pickup goes to the effects box input, the plug for the bridge pickup goes to the compressor input. The outputs of the effects box and compressor go to the "Two Mono Jack to One Mono Jack" adaptor. Have I got this right so far?

Hard wiring the outputs of these two boxes together with the adaptor could be a problem, depending on the output circuitry of the boxes. It may be that the output of one of them overpowers the output of the other.

You will definitely blow something up! Don't do this!

You might want to find some sort of small mixer. Make sure you get one with instrument inputs though. The line inputs on most mixers are too low impedance for your pickups to drive when the effects are bypassed.

By the way, I bet everyone would appreciate a picture of your maple 4003!
Turn on, tune up, rock out!

i will try the mixer, think i can get one my mon-tues evening. definately cheaper than a new two channel head (even though i have to admit i like my AMB 500 ashdown sound, i do not like the controls )

i think i captured the photo. ordered the fireglo, then after a yr of waiting was getting tired and saw a great deal for the mapleglo which i ordered another yr went by ... nothing. then both came within 10days of eachother. Prudence, my wife, mentioned one should go. i couldnt decide. so put both up in one ad, allowing the buyer to decide. i have a mapleglo. which i love.

The problem here is your Two Mono Jack to One mono Jack adapter. You need a Stereo to Two mono jack adapter, something like this: http://backstage.musiciansfriend.com/Ac ... 001000.sku

The two mono jack i have is correct for the situation. BUT, i tried the mixer. That did not work. THEN i completely forgot I had a old peavey keyboard amp with two channels. I plugged into that i it worked.
I am now looking for a new head with two channels. I kind of got hooked into hearing my bass with and without the effect at the same time.

No, it's not, if the instrument plug is mono as you said in your first post. That will make only one output work and it will likely just be the treble pickup.

?? my first post said i have a stereo chord. so yes, 1 end is the bridge pu the other is the neck pu. i plugged one into each channel of the amp. i was able to adjust each channel, and either hear one pu or both.
just finding out there are not that many two channel heads. seems they are very expensive or low power

One of the best cheap sources for good 2-channel bass heads is to watch eBay for an old Acoustic 140 or 150. They have power out the wazoo (assuming you hook one up to a wazoo), they're extremely durable, have a good range of tone controls for each channel and they can often be had in good shape for $150 or less. Back in the day, I played halls seating 2,000-3,000 people - before the days of running amps into the P.A. system, using my 140 head and a Sunn 18" folded horn cabinet. I don't think I ever cranked it past half volume. It used to be fun to completely palm-mute the strings, turn the amp up to about 3/4 and very lightly tap a string. The whole house would shake.

You can find a Walter Woods occasionally used, one of the stereo models with two power amps in it. I have a mono power amp version, but it still has two identical and independent preamps with their own effects loops, too.
