John Entwitles Ric
I was watching two of my The Who documentary's the other day and early on John was playing a dot neck Ric 4001 S with a tug bar under the G string. It looked like it may have been Fireglo, the clip was black and white. They may have still been called the High Numbers at that point or where very early in the days of being called The Who. It was when then played the Railroad Tavern. I think I read that he, Chris Squire and Pete Quaife bought the first three Ric's shipped over to England.
Re: John Entwitles Ric
John got one of the first shipment of RM1999 basses, that is what you see in the video, and it is FG.

Scroll down this page for more info--http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/bass/bass6066.html-- one fuzzy color shot of the Rick - he was quite the collector of basses. I think the story (per a Chris Squier interview) is that CS had dropped out of school and was working in a music shop in central London - they got the first 3 new RM basses into the shop - Peter Quaife of The Kinks and Entwistle bought the first 2, and Squire bought the 3d on layaway.

Great shots of Johns axes. His Alembic spiderweb bass was the bomb. Towards the end John playing that crazy looking bass that looked like it came from outer space. I saw The Who with the Clash in Oakland,CA on there first Farewell Tour. Damn they were loud.

Joel,
The RM1999 was an export model which only came in one color---FireGlo.
Sadly, his RM went the way of most RM's of that era
John Entwistle used THREE seperate Rickenbacker basses with The WHO. They were:
1. RM1999 2. '67 4005 MG 3. Prototype 4008 White
He used the first two in the early days. The 4008 made its appearance later on "The Who by Numbers"
(I don't know if he ever used the 4008 on any of their tours)
There is pictorial evidence to show that he had about six Ric basses in his collection, including a FG 4005 Lightshow bass.
John also had some Rickenbacker guitars within his MASSIVE collection!!!!
BTW: That's Mr. Entwistle playing the 4008 in my avatar

The 4005 MG that the Ox had was sold at auction a few years ago and purchased by Forumite Simon Mole who took this shot of it:

No one played like John. Everyone in The Who played lead. Pete lead guitar and windmill power chord manic, Keith lead drums and all around manic, John lead Bass and snappy dresser and Rog lead vocal and pretty boy of the band. When they were on no one could touch them. Towards the end they got a little silly. Last good album was Who Are You which is my fav Who song. That song has such power.

+1!
The Ox was a top bass player, a true revolutionary! I just gotta say the thundering bass sound on 'Live at Leeds' is unreal. I do contend they did some good stuff after 'Who are you', though, I think Quadrophenia is quality, check 'Can you see the real me'. I remember seeing a documentary or somethin years ago of John walking down a staircase in what must have been his mansion, and every space was hung with bassess, hundreds of them!

Quad came out in 74 or so and Who Are You came out in 78. They had a few good songs but the albums were not up to par.
Re: John Entwitles Ric
Thank you Joel, I stand corrected.

Re: John Entwitles Ric
They redid some the the music for the Quad film soundtrack and the songs got rerecorded. Not sure what year. I have it on vinyl. Face Dances had some good stuff on it and It's Hard was down right laughable. Eminence Front was a big departure and pretty interesting due to that very reason. I have not listened to either one of those albums in years. I respect them as musicians and I realize they need to create but sometimes you need to have people around you that you trust and they need to say this is **** and not just feed their egos due to who they are and what they did in the past.
