Silver sparkle 4001 on eBay

Post by markyl »

Wow!! I love this finish!! But, the lister says it was a custom finish. OK by that does he mean factory custom or a non genuine re-finish?

Also, the tuning keys... they are so wrong, just don't look man enough for the job! The lister says they are Rick parts, is this oorrect?

Anyway, enjoy :D

It's a non-factory refinish. That doesn't mean it's a bad finish though, just not factory. The tuners have been replaced too. You can see the holes that were used to mount the original tuners. I wonder why they didn't plug those and paint over them when they did the refin? Maybe the new tuners were added even later...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I actually counted the frets in hope to see a 21 fretter, much to my dissapointment it wasn't.

IF this IS a '72......then the tailpiece and neck pickup are not original either. The spacing of the neck p/up is also wrong if my knowledge is correct.

While most of the hardware are replacements, the spacing of the neck pickup is correct for a '72 at the 1/2" spacing. It also has the shedua "skunk stripe, checker binding, and sparkle inlays. With a retro package of hardware and a refinish, it could look like a proper '72 again.

The SN on this bass J07554 is from Oct 1987.

The TRC certainly looks 1972. Perhaps it was parted out and then reassembled with parts from a late 80s bass??

Thanks for the info!

So it does seem to be a bit of a mongrel..made up from a variety of sources. Which to me makes it rather overpriced, even if the body is a '72 so much else would need to be sourced and done to it to bring it back close to it's original state.

I still like that silver sparkle though!!

Love the silver sparkle finish. However, the back of the neck doesn't look right to me without it.

am i just having a senior moment, i don't remember ever seeing set-neck ric basses that had the full appointments, like the FW inlays, neck and body binding etc? i thought the set neck basses always were dot neck,no binding affairs. could this have been a neck through bass that got modified? (also the seller has it listed as a neck through, although clearly it isn't.) the sparkle is kinda interesting, sort of a DANORICTRO look.

It's neck through. They just taped off the neck and heal when refinishing it. May be a 72 body but all the parts including the jack plate are later and the schallar tuners don't belong.

ahh, thanks,Wes! clearly i was suffering from an optical delusion....the pic of the back of that bass looked to me like a set neck, but i can see why i thought that at first glance.
