4004Cii Trust Rod Replacement and Custom Paint
I have a 4004Cii that needs the trust rods replaced. The rod hex top snapped off at the adjustment spot on the headstock. I have the replacement rods, but I also have the 4004Cii that has the neck pickup that sits about an inch off of the neck butt. I know it has to be routed out to replace the rods, so I was thinking about having a plate put over the routed area (for future replaced rods) and have the whole bass (neck included, like the painted neck Ricks) painted one color. The question is does anyone know a great guitar doctor in the LA area that can do the work, both the rods and custom paint. I love the way this bass plays and sounds but the action is starting to get to high.
Thanks Rick Family

How are you certain that the rods need to replaced? Does one nut or both just turn freely?
The JETGLO finish name should be officially changed to JETGLO ROCKS!

I have to stop reading/replying to posts before I've had my coffee in the morning!

The rod broke at the top where the hex bolt is located. During a neck adjustment, it just snapped off. I even tried to maybe grab one thread of the remaining end and tried to get the adjustment nut to catch, but once that nut is gone, the tension of the neck sucks some of the rod back into the neck.

I've been there with a snapped off rod on my former 4004Cii just like yours. RIC took care of the problem, but what you have in mind is a good solution, or you can get a nice brass/aluminum/titanium/metal of your choice made to fit with your name (for example) engraved in it to put over the route. That would end up looking a bit Alembicish, which could be cool.

Robert, if you want someone who is really good in the LA area, call Steve Soest (714) 538-0272. His repair shop is in Orange County.

Since you plan on painting everything, would the fretboard removal be a solution instead of routing? (assuming the rods never be replaced again.)

Thanks for the help. Thanks for the number Rickbrother. I think the way to replace the rods is with the routing and I too think the plate would look great. I'm not afraid of making this a custom Rick as I own 12 other stock Ricks and this one would become personal.
