77 Nut width

Post by VRICKY63 »

I've been watching a 77 4001 on ebay thinking it would have a nut width of 1 5/8" like the two 77s I used to own. I asked the seller to measure the nut and he say's 1 3/4". Did the nut width vary that much on the 77 models ?

Best thing you can do is explain your concern and ask him to take a picture. While I thought most Rics from that era were 1 & 5/8'' at the nut (possibly my favorite size), you and I both know they have always tended to vary, even to the present day. Maybe this was a fluke that bucked the trend.

Yeah Josh. I told him it was important to my left wrist to know exactly what the width was. He came back with 1 3/4". Too bad, I really wanted an azure 77.

My 76 is 1 & 5/8''. Keep looking I guess. I bet this one was a fluke. I would try to have him take a pic just in case he's not good at reading his own ruler...

I would guess that this one would feel like your other two 77's. Maybe the guy isn't measuring correctly.

My '76, '77, '79, '80, and '81 4001's all felt the same to me as does my '79 4002 and my '79 4005. The nut slots can be cut closer to the fretboard edges sometimes...that's what seems to vary the most on mine. All great necks and I'm sure you would be happy with it. If not, catch and release.

I couldn't take the risk. It sold for more than I expected anyway. I bet it was a ruler reader error.

It sounds to me like he just can't read a ruler.
