Mapleglo, Binding & Pickguards

Post by cjj »

Just curious as to the popular opinion on which pickguard and binding colors go best with mapleglo.

Yeah, there are more colors than just black, white, and gold, but those cover most of what was produced by RIC over the years...

If I may digress a bit: From 1975 to 1985, Mapleglo was listed in RIC price lists as a "Custom" color with a $25 upcharge. From 1986, Mapleglo came standard with black binding, trim, and hardware; if you wanted white/chrome on a Mapleglo, you had to throw in another $50 (up to $65 in 1989). This changed in 1993 to Mapleglo coming standard with white/chrome, and not black/black. Interesting tidbit.

What about gold with no binding, like a 325c58?

Well, that's a completely different category, same with Woody's 4004Cii. But for this poll, I'm just interested in mapleglo with binding and a pickguard...

So far, we're the only ones...

Personally, of my Mapleglo Ricks with binding, I've got a White + White, a White + Black, and a Black + Black which I think is the best. I've also got a 4004Cii MG, which is gorgeous too, but doesn't apply here...

Option one, white binding, white pickguard. It's classic and goes with everything.

Checkered binding, white pg, honey maple = Classic.

New maple just doesn't seem to look good with all that white.

Checkered binding has been done with both white and black outer binding (I have examples of each) so I didn't specifically mention it separately...

Yes, but only two models came with black/checker standard: Shadow and 4002. That's not to say that they didn't do it to any others. It's possible that there were some pre-1973 White basses that had black outer with checker, but I have yet to see one.
