I would suggest "well beat", as in "check out this new, well beat 4003". Or perhaps "bullied", such as "For sale, brand new bullied 360".

Over here in dear old blighty the phrase of the moment seems to be 'road worn', but this always suggests to me a well ragged rear tyre off a sports bike, not a guitar! :?

Road Worn and Relic are term Fender use at the moment. Gibson has the Tom Murphy Aged guitars. Some Artist models are made to have every nick and ding on it like Rory Gallagers Strat, Joe Strummers Tele, Andy Summers Tele, SRV's Lenny Strat, David Gilmour Black Strat, and Billy Zooms Silver Jet ect. A nice guitar cost a small fortune as it is, don't understand paying more for a new one that looks beat up right off the rack.

That beat up Fireglo 4000 haunts my dreams. I saw it on eBay, the price was right, and I deeply regret not pulling the trigger. Shoulda-woulda-coulda.

Now apply that logic to stonewashed jeans...

Some want their guitars shiny new, others like them Relic'ed, and Fender offers both and makes profit either way. Supply and demand, I can understand that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Burst finishes started as an imitation of the way old violin-family instruments look, darker near the edges. So in a way every faded brownish burst, for example a matte Autumnglo, is a bit artificially aged.

And what about RIC's Amber Fireglo, with the yellowed binding and inlays? That's also artificial ageing of the finish.

I do think a battle worn guitar does look cool. As long as you are the one to tell the tale of how the scars got there. Making a nice guitar and then taking a sander or a belt buckle to it to make it look beat up in my eyes is ridiculous. But it is your money spend it how you choose. Would you go down to a Ford dealership and buy a brand new Mustang and have the sales rep smash dents into it to make it look cool? Now I am just using Ford as an example, insert your favorite car maker and model where the words Ford and Mustang are to avoid argument of who makes a better car.

Antique-style furniture manufacturers have been doing artificial ageing for hundreds of years.
