That's really cool Jason. Did you have someone sand down the slab body and apply a satin-type finish?

Yep. Check out BGC for more details. Gary Henson did a great job. The thread is in Expert/Texpert Fixing a Hole and has the title JM's Bass Restoration.

In short, he removed the poorly made treble wing, removed the drywall screws holding it in, and made a new wing. He removed what binding was left, sanded the curves, did the black paint job (not really JG). It's super cool. I'm still adjusting (like Nomad and JT) to an S body and neck binding and triangles, but that's what I wanted... they say careful what you wish for!!! :)
