how do I remove the nut on my 360?

Post by Sir Ricardo »

Hello!

I've got a 70s 360, and it appears as though the nut is too low.

I've adjusted the neck / bridge, and have gotten the action just about right, as long as the strings are fretted. Even at the first fret, every string plays great when fretted.

However, open strings are unplayable. More precisely, when played open the E A D and G strings rattle like crazy, and the B and high E strings start out as B# and E# ( the first fret is acting as a zero fret on these two strings).

My thought is to remove the nut, and then shim it. I'd like to get it off without damaging it or the finish.

Any thoughts? I've not tried to take it off yet, so as far as I know, it might only take a modest "tap" or so. I don't know.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

thanks -

Richard

This sounds like one for Scott Pope. Any insights, Scott?

Place a towel against the nut, then a flat-head screwdriver against the towel (fretboard side of the nut, obviously), and tap lightly. It's only held on by a few drops of wood glue so it should come off easily. Though it may take a sliver of wood with it...just go easy on it.

I usually take off the bellplate, take a thin knife and press lightly between the neck and the nut.
To shim the nut i usually take a small bit of wood or sanding paper.

A bit of plastic works aswell.

Oops, forgot about that part! Yes, take the TRC off first...
