1973 4001 Autumnglo

Post by Kopfjaeger »

I knew this forum may be hazardous to my financial health!! Since I've been a member here, I've really taken quite a liking to the look of the Autumnglo. I found one for sale. It is a bit pricey, I think, so I want to make sure I have the facts and not over pay. What is a 1973 4001 in Autumnglo worth? it has checkered binding and a few very small dings. The finish is in very nice shape for a bass this old and it has been refretted. Also one of the machien heads has been replaced.

How does $3,700. sound?

We need more info, such as month of manufacture as many features/details changed throughout 1973. Got pics or link to pics?

Sorry for being a bit clandestine. I suppose it's no secret but if it were, it's not any more.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Discussed here, we think it's a refin.

viewtopic.php?f=68&t=401209&hilit=4001+1973

The prices started at £2999 and has come down steadily, so I assume that the seller has been given the info.

Wow! Impressive!! OK, A re finish makes sense. A 39 year old bass that has been refretted should have a bit more wear to the finish than this one shows. At that price, my search continues.

I'll be reading up on the vintage posts here in this section but what are desirable features to look for or want on a bass of this or similar vintage??

Thanks for the help.

This bass also has a replace current style bridge pickup cover, and non original toggle switch bat. Interesting that he says two of the original tuning keys were replaced with newer type, I thought all the flat key Grovers were gone by mid '73. :?

I've seen NOS Grovers on eBay a couple of times recently Jeff. There are extra (filled) holes for a different tail piece too, so that may also be a replacement.

If it had Full width pearl inlays I would say bite since its the bass of your dreams. Or you could buy a project bass, and have Paul W Refin it, or have you checked out Montezuma brown? Thats a simmilar color. Good luck Sepp!

Ivan,

Thanks for your post! There is what I believe to be a walnut/Autumn glow (1977) on ebay right now. It looks like it may need a bit of work but it is a 4001. So I'm keeping an eye on it. It does not have as much of a sunburst effect as the 1973 one posted but it may do nicely.

Here is the ebay bass I am quite interested in.

As long as it does not venture too far above the $1,000 mark, I'd be willing to pick it up and put more money into it to make it right.

That's quite a rare finish Sepp, which appears to be in good condition. With only the minor work needed this might end up considerably more than $1K...

Be prepared to possibly go a little higher with the $$$!

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. It looks like it's beginning to climb already. I'm prepared to make it expensive for someone to out bid me.

I'll keep you all posted.

It's at 650 already with 5 days left. It's gonna get pretty high.
