These are stainless, John...boxes of 5.

That's why I'm offering the one extra to KH.

Paul, these would be easier to grasp and turn.

Or, just stick a screwdriver through to turn easily.

I'm not sure I can re-tap the mute for 1/2-13...

But they'd be great as strap bolts.

+1!

I love the mute! I'd say I only use it maybe 5% of the time, but it's wonderful to have on board! It's a very convenient way to get that thumpy upright tone, not to mention being essential to nailing Paul McCartney's tone.

I took the mute off entirely (screws were in my way) 30+ years ago, never missed it!

At the moment I'm using the mute slightly on (for the fretless whine) about 80% of the time. Its only 1/2 of a tun either way to activate it and turn it off. I have however lubricated the screws with teflon chain lubricant and they turn like silk.
They are a fiddle to set up correctly though.
I have done the pickup in place of the mute thing too.... I thought it sounded lousy...

John, if you wanted to lose the mute from new models do it! It would attact some new customers (who hate the old tailpiece) and increase the resale value of older models (for the folks who love it) at the same time!
