Rickenbacker Neck

Post by david/wales/u.k »

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and saving up for a Ric 330 or 360.....( did own both before and sold em :x )..Anyway,I know that this is probably gonna sound really silly but I got a question concerning the necks...( I live a couple of hundred miles from the nearest store so I have to rely on others opinions...also it was a long time ago when I sold my Rics so I can't really remember much about them  )......About two years ago I had a really nice acoustic guitar (not rickenbacker) and my friend also bought the same model. There was one major problem though, that we both experienced with our guitars...It was a thin neck, which in itself is fine, but the high E string was so close to the end of the fret that it actually kept slipping off the fretboard. Having to hold the string with the little finger, as on a G chord for example, was incredibly frustrating. I couldn't remember, in 20 years of playing, of ever having had this problem before...( couldn't recall it when I had the rickies but as I said, that was a long time ago, when I couldn't really play the guitar anyway  ).....Anyways, this experience has made me wary when it comes to getting any new guitar so I'm basically looking for reassurance that this doesn't happen with the Rickies......I know it sounds a bit daft but until I can try one out for myself, would appreciate your views on this.............Thanks

The Rickenbacker neck is unique; especially considering it's built into the body, unlike most guitars made today. The shape is, as I said, unique, and therefore requires you to get used to it; even for rhythm.

However, when I had a 360, I played it exclusively for two months straight, and when I picked up my other guitars, WOW, what a difference! I played so much better, and I had only been through my normal practice routines! So, now with my new 620/12, if I practice scales for even twenty minutes, it is as though I have played for an hour on a regular guitar. 8)

My advice is to try one out if you can, but you won't have any problem with strings slipping away or anything. The lacquered fretboard is very nice for bending!

Welcome, David! :D

Regarding the string slipping off the edge of the fingerboard, that is just a matter of getting a new nut cut with the strings not so close to the edge. If you like everything else about that acoustic guitar (and still have it), just fix the problem. 8)

Regarding one other thing:

This is a Rickie!

Thanks.......Regarding the acoustic..I think the guitar technician mentioned that (cutting the nut) but he also said that if you did that, then the strings would be unaturally squashed making fingerstyle playing very difficult...For a guitar costing the equivalent of $1000, I didn't want to do that...Anyway, I exchanged the guitar and am very happy with the one I got :)

They used a lot of acoustic guitars on that album Shrubber Soul.
