Does this look like a problem?

Post by Halbert »

This is the joint of the fretboard to the neck on my 330. This has been this way since I got the guitar a couple of years ago. So far the problem seems to only be cosmetic but I worry some that it might begin to worsen. I have no idea what is involved with repaing something like this or how much I could exect to pay to have someone do it.

From the pic it is hard to tell whether there is any separation. The issue may just be finish wear/damage at the joint area, in which case you could leave it as long as you like. Given the problem area hasn't expanded in the couple of years you've had the 330, and assuming that the guitar is functioning as it should, my guess is that it is purely cosmetic. Rickenbacker finish can flake off around these join areas if the instrument has been subjected to fairly sudden dramatic changes in humidity and/or temperature.

In the event that there is actual separation, the issue isn't huge and should not be expensive to repair functionally if you are happy with the cosmetic damage (the repair will involve cleaning up the crack, then regluing and clamping it, with some clean-up, which is not particularly time-intensive). You may be told that the guitar needs a refinish - which will be a big money item. This is only warranted if you want the guitar to be cosmetically perfect.

Thanks Evan. If this is more than just a bit of the finish flaking off, I can't tell. The guitar plays better than any I've had before and despite a few blemishes, I'm very happy with it.
