#1 for Michael Mannring,although i think of him more as a one man orchestra than a bassist!

did not notice if he was previously mentioned,but Jeff Berlin certainly opened my eyes to the fact that a fretted bass could be made to sound fretless through playing technique (rather than a "fretless" setting on a effect box)

And he is a fascinating and bright man/teacher. His interviews are very enlightening. He doesn't hold back with his strong opinions. Check out the "Innerviews" site for him and many other fine interviews with various and sundry musicians.

I have read all of Berlin's material in Bass Player and (UK) Bass Guitar Magazine over the years, he definitely does not hold anything back!

I actually attended a bass-clinic given by Jeff Berlin many Moons ago.
I also enjoy reading his columns.....I LOVE that he says what he feels and doesn't hold back!!!!!

He is a tremendous player!!!!!!!!!!!

Has some mentioned Percy Jones from Brand X? I was just listening to Do They Hurt? He can tear it up.

I saw Brand X at the Roxy in Hollywood. The lineup was Percy Jones, John Goodsall, Peter Robinson, and Phil Collins.

Great seats right up front, but early on a guy on the other side of our table threw up all over it. This seemed unfortunate at first, but then the rest of us were moved to a standing area just behind and to the right of left-handed Phil, who I think was at the height of his drumming prowess then. So we saw Phil's entire performance, just feet away.

Always loved Percy Jones; he's one of a kind, the first fretless player I listened to.

MIke Karn was amazing, After hearing Polariods when it came out,I ran out and picked up my first fretless bass. Though I can appreciate Mark King, I just grew tired of the slap pop bass sound when everyone jumped on the band wagon in the 80's. I did like Larry Graham a lot.

I much prefer melodic line bass players ( just my cup of tea) like Squire, Karn, Barry Adamson (magazine), Peter Hook etc. interweaving with Drums and Guitar/Keyboards. Derek Forbes of early Simple Minds had a good sensibility of what to play and what not to play it with in the group a very under rated bass player for his minimalist style.

Never got onto Rush even though I owned 2112 and Farewell to Kings back in my prog loving days

Met Jeff Berlin And Bill Bruford after a concert for Gradually Going Tornado, great guys the talked to my friends and I for almost an hour.I totally forgot about Jeff until someone here mentioned him indeed a great player.

Percy Jones another awesome player, forgot about him too.

After reading some of these lists, its made me want to go back and revisit a lot of players mentioned.

Excellent bassist! One of my all-time favorite "albums" (remember those?) was Live at Fillmore East. I think in some ways, the Allman Brothers Band is underrated because of the southern country flavor that they seemed to migrate to after the deaths of Duane and Berry. Their early stuff was more jazzy and featured interesting time signatures. Listen to the fabulous "Hot 'Lanta" on the L@FE and ask your woman if she would like a waltz! What a thunderous ending!

Glen Cornick of Jethro Tull.
He is the player that made me want to be a bass guitarist.
Obviously I like Macca,Entwistle,Bruce and Squire etc.

But,
Listen to Bouree on the Stand Up album and if you never had the pleasure of seeing Tull in their earlier prime
as I did,

Apart from the trousers,
What I particularly like about Cornick was his knack of never coming at the bassline from an obvious direction.
Glen had a great array of basses,no Rick unfortunately,but he is up there with Jack Bruce in my opinion.
