Rick Nielsen of Cheap trick had already published a guitar collection book which John Entwistle liked the look of and told him so when they met at the 1995 NAMM convention.
Nielsen put him in touch with the publishers and assembled the same photographers to do the Bass culture book.
Lots of the Ox bass collection went at auction after his death and I seem to remember mention of someone getting the 4001/8 so its around somewhere.
The Rickenbacker section of the book doesnt include the RM (where is it now?) unfortunately but it has the "Tommy" 4005 which is described as a Rickenbacker"Model 31" (any ideas on that?).
Theres a 1965 360 mint never played with tags in the collection!

John and Chris's 1973 4001 eight stringers were a pair and it would be good to see pics of both together.
I dont recall seeing Entwistle using his but I saw Chris use his eight string on the Topographic Oceans tour through to the Going For the One tour.
Some of the live recordings of "Roundabout" encores from this period have the eight string high in the mix.
Johns bass can be seen in the background on the video of the "Who are you" rehearsals with Kenny Jones prior to the first Who gig after the death of Keith Moon.
I went to that one at Wembley football stadium but as I say I dont remember seeing the Rick at that one.
I do remember the PA cutting out during AC/DC but you could still hear Angus Young playing guitar on top of his Marshall stacks!

A couple things here---correct me if I'm wrong at any point---

1. I read an old Entwistle interview where he stated that "The neck on his RM was so BADLY bowed that you could shoot arrows off of it." Could it be that his RM went the way of A LOT of RM's????????

2. Yes......the "Rickenbacker 31" is an odd designation for his 4005

3. As for Squire's 4001/8.....I read somewhere that his sustained serious damage when Chris landed on it when falling during a YES performance. Don't know how true that is.

Also, I snagged a Sotheby's Auction book that featured ALL the items for the Entwistle Estate auction. Some basses I expected to see---including the RM1999---were NOT in it, and others I wasn't aware of WERE.

I also have the Rick Neilson Guitar book---And I don't even like Cheap Trick!!!!!

Vincent does indeed have the Squire 8 string. It recently had some work done, and is now in solid working order and looking good. I also have a photo somewhere of the Entwistle bass from the original auction catalogue, which sold, IIRC, in the region of $6500-7000.

Pete... I was at the Wembley gig too. I had forgotten about the PA cutting out, but do remember Angus coming round on Bon's shoulders directly in front of me as I was right at the front that day.

The Maximum R&B DVD by The Who has The Ox using his 4008, but he was only tuning it, and he told Bob Pridden that the sound was too bright.

And Greg, John's 1999 was, according to him, the second 1999 into England and he loved at first, but because they were playing the Marquee, the Railway Tavern and a lot of other hot clubs, the neck proved instable and warped badly due to the heat and other things.

"Success Story" from "By Numbers" was recorded with the Ric 8-string.

I'll bet the neck warp was down to strings rather than the conditions of a gig setting. The Quaife bass warp was due to extreme cold and then heat, and I'd be surprised if that happened specifically again here.

More likely, those early Roto's or heavy duty flats would have been a severe test for the neck, and you can bet no one had a clue how to adjust it when it started to bow...
