New To Forum

Post by j_michael »

Hello, I'm new to the Rickenbacker forum as well as a new Rickenbacker owner. Great forum with tons of useful information! I've been playing guitar for around 40 years, but did not discover the beauty, quality, and playability of a Rickenbacker until the summer of my 50th year. This past summer I purchased a 330VP in Montezuma Brown. I'm so knocked out by this guitar that I ordered a 660 12 string in Mapleglo. Both from Dave's Guitar Shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Great place to do business and you're treated with total respect. I'm really looking forward to getting my 660/12, but it will likely be after the first of the year before it arrives. Any 660/12 players out there who'd like to share their experiences about the instrument, and perhaps, even pictures? Thanks.

Gorgeous guitar. The amplifier is not too shabby either. Image
Welcome John, I hope you enjoy your visits.

As you may have seen in the "contrast" thread, I just got a 660/12 (Montezuma brown). In a nutshell, I love it. I too have a 330 (MG) so I guess we are opposite/twins or something Image Although the 330 has hi-gains (which I like a lot)

I really enjoy playing the 660 with moderate overdrive - it sounds HUGE.

And, I believe you made the right call on getting a 660 as your rick 12.

Welcome!

I find that all Ric twelves sound huge when overdriven, although I imagine that the added sustain of a 660 makes it all the more impressive. I'm amazed that Ric twelves aren't used by more rhythm guitarists looking for a big, killer rock sound. It's a total failure of imagination on their part.

Nice figuring on that one Jeff. Is that a Boogie on top of that Sunn cab?

The only recorded instances I am aware of using OD on a rick 12. There must be more out there:

Miki Berenyi of Lush --> Although her sound is so effected it's hard to tell what's going on

Mike Campbell (tom Petty's guitarist) --> *some* lead stuff. The lead part on their "So you want to be a rock n roll star" is amazing. Also, there's about a 3-second fill on one of the tunes off of Into The Great Wide Open.

Yes, it's a criminally overlooked aspect of the Rick 12.

I had my 660/12 out at a gig last weekend, on one song I do leads using my Fulltone Fulldrive (thru a blues deluxe (40 watts,1x12). Man, it is an awesome sound.

Yep, that's a Boogie! A DC-2 Studio Caliper. I also have the 1-12 combo cabinet for it.

Sweet, I have a DC-5. It's a 1x12 also. Here's a couple of shots.

Here's my use of a distorted Ric 12 string. At 58 seconds in & through the bridge & again at 1:45 and heaviest at 3:04:

Let us not forget the great Fred 'Sonic' Smith of the MC5! He played a 450MG 12 string on a number of great (and loud and distorted) MC5 tracks!

Hmmm. I've always been a big MC5 fan, but could never reconcile it with my love of Rickenbacker guitars. Guess I didn't have to, huh?
