how do I install truss rods in my 4001 c64 reissue?
Hello:
I bought a c64 off eBay, and it arrived with some strangely angled truss rod bolts. As in, they were angled up around 30 degrees. Anyway, when I adjusted them (the neck had way too much relief), the bass one sheared off.
So now I need to buy and install new truss rods.
I've never done this.
Any thoughts? I realize that certainly this topic has been covered in this forum, but when I searched I couldn't find it. If someone could point me to a good post, I'd much appreciate it.
thanks much -
Richard

I did this to a v63, it was pretty straightforward. I mean, just pull the old ones out and put the new ones in. Might be a good advice to put a light layer of grease or vaseline on the new ones to reduce friction.
Some say you should bend the rods before installation, others say keep them straight.
First of all, I would find out why the old ones went bad.
Good luck on your project!

Do a search on the forum for truss rod replacing. There have been many threads concerning it. It varies a little depending on age of bass and type. I thought that there was a video outlining how this is done somewhere - maybe you can find it. Also one thing I would recommend is to put a padded clamp or two on the neck , holding the finger board down, while pulling and inserting the rods. It just makes me feel better. Ask questions if you are unsure. There is a wealth of know how on this forum. good luck!

First I would try putting a clamp on the neck just at the nut, then prying with a flat blade screwdriver to try and bend the rods back to straight. But it is important to find out why they are bent in the first place. You may not need to remove them if this works. If it doesn't, then remove the strings, put the clamp on at the nut like before, remove the pickguard, get the truss nuts loose any way you can, leave them on a turn or turn and a half, and push them to bring the rods at the other end out and remove the acorn nuts. Once they are off, push the rods back up the neck and remove them from the headstock end. ALWAYS protect the wood finish with cloths and such to not get gouges, nicks, scrapes, or scratches.

The truss rod nuts are pointing upward at an angle because the channel the rods are in is curved. It's normal for them to be that way. Remove the truss rods from the body end, not the headstock end. Otherwise it will be difficult to install the hardware at the body end properly. The replacements from RIC will have heatshrink on them which will make it much easier to re-insert them. Put painters tape on the front of the body to protect the finish during this type of work. The clamp on the neck is not neccesary.
