Bad Grover Tuner

Thanks for the offer. But since I'm a lefty I would need a rightys E and A. Anyone ever swap their Grovers and with Different tuners. If so what would be the best and less painful and would not look horrible as far as the holes go

Hmm, I'm pretty much a purist when it comes to my Rickenbacker. I paid a boat load of money for a set of 4 Wavey Grovers to swap out the two straight Grover's on my 1973 4001. For me, it had to be right. Anything less was unacceptable in my mind. Yes, the Grovers have their faults but this can be corrected. Either re peen the posts or tap them for screws. That's my suggestion.

If you do decide to swap them out, let me know if you want to sell the remaioning wavey's since I may be interested.

I have a spare grover here that exploded as soon as I replaced the strings on my 1972 4001.
I got a replacement one from a forumite and I still have the spare one popped open, I leave it like that because I can easily close it by "re-mushrooming" the pins so it would accommodate any string.
I suggest getting a replacement tuner and avoid replacing the tuners with different ones.

Is there a spring or anything inside the tuner. when it popped, The cover fell to the floor and I swore I saw something fly by my head but I couldnt find anything anywhere. When I put the keywind back in with the gear and put the cover on the keywind has movement. Not tight. But it slowly turns the pole. Nithing looks broke or snapped. Was it packed with grease maybe giving it a tight feel? I also love to keep things original. But it bugs me to think this could happen in a middle of a gig.

My guess is a washer popped out and ended up in that place where these kinds of things go when these kinds of things happen.

I tried the swagging. no dice. I'm now in the process of LOCTITE Epoxy. Until I find a replacement or replace them all. Research continues. My first Rick in Two years. not a very nice welcome back

Don't look too harshly on Rickenbackers for it, some Grovers were/are better than others. There is a technique that fixes the problem quite well, but it does involve drilling/tapping and some small machine screws. I have not had to do so on mine, but if needed, that is the way to go.

I love Ricks. Dont blame them at all. I actually really like the feel of the Grovers more so the the Standard Rick keywinds. I may try and keep them.

So along with trying to Swag the best I could, Which still didnt create a tight secure fit. Cover would pull losse as I tightend the string. I Then used some Loctite Expoxy. The Kind you mix. 3200 PSI. Snapped it together. Let sit for 24 hours. And it looks rock solid. Unwound and rewound a few times with no signs of any movement at all. I have another grover from Ebay coming just in case. But I wanted to share this. I think its may be good with Loctite. Of course only time will tell. I now noticed my G string Cover is pulling away. I will prob Loctite that as well. If they pop I will update this. Or 6 months from if they dont pop with Loctite I will update.

I can permenently fix your grovers! My 72 had exploded grovers.I drilled and tapped them for screws.Ive done several sets and its a Permenent fix!Glue or epoxy will eventually fail! It never works and is always merely temporary.If you want me to tap them for you just pm me.I will fix them for no charge.You will have to pay shipping however.6 bucks one way via USPS priority mail.
