Model 4001 Wiring Landmarks

Post by admin »

Mark: I thought that this photo taken by Greg Shadoan (I hope you don't mind Greg) would be a nice reference for discussion about capacitors, pots and the like. Please take us on a guided tour.

The aqualung tanks are really .047mfd 100Volt capacitors.
These were used in the amps and carried over to the guitars .

The pots are CTS ,cloth wire ,Switchcraft brand switch,Columbia Flex life grey cable .

The .0047 mfd cap is under the lower blue cap, this is the crisp -O- sound capacitor.
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!

Mark-I don't need the ROS option & my normal jack is inconsistently shorting (?) out. how do I rewire this jack so I can bypass the shorting mechanism, and prevent my amp from popping a voicecoil?

I do this ALL the time ,I have posted this before ,but will answer it again;

You can do this two ways.

1-remove all the wires that go to the jacks and reuse them or go buy two new mono Switchcraft jacks .

I also install a .0047mfd cap on the hot of the stereo /Rick-O-Sound jack and run that to the hot of the mono /standard jack.

Then connect the grounds and hook up a piece of the shielded cable to the mono/standard jack.

Connect that to the bridge pickup volume control and solder a jumper wire from that same lug to the neck pickup volume control.

This gives you mono 100% of the time and the Rick-O-Sound jack has the vintage crisp sound ,while the standard /mono jack has the "FULL" tone .

That way you pick,Geddy or Chris in your sound.

2-unsolder all the wire from the two stock jacks and wire as dual mono jacks .You could reuse both shielded leads .
But the jumper wire needs to be installed to connect the hot lugs that the jack leads go to.
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!

Did anyone make note of the catalog number of the Columbia flexlife? It's printed right on the grey jacket and should be a four digit number beginning with 13__. Thanks.
