I received an email from the seller explaining the story to me, and although it sounds a little strange, it sounds like it is legitimate. I will repost some of it here if he allows me to. I'd have no fear on this one.

He seems legit to me. Here is what he sent to my inbox. I invited him to come and join the forum. He sounds like one of us.

Sir,

I am writing you due to the fact that I am not yet registered to post on the Rickenbacker Forum web site and can not respond to the comments made by yourself and others. For you to make accusations that I am a “fake” is your mistake! But for you to spread rumors that are simply not true fly’s against the spirit of the Forum! As I see it.

If you find it hard to believe then you should be in my shoes. In 1973 I was 16 and I played in garage bands (high school stuff) I worked all summer and saved up to buy a brand new 1973 4001 Rick Fireglo (we called it sunburst then) model base guitar. I had just installed Roto-Sound round wound strings and practiced just one time (Talk about the sound!) with my new bass when I had to go somewhere with my family. (I lived at home!) I think we went to Dinner or something and when we got home the rear door of our house was kicked in and our dog injured. My 4001 was gone! I turns out the only person who knew we were gone was the person who helped steal it. A friend of mine!

30 years later and a person knocked on my door and hands my wife this Bass and a letter from the person who helped steal it. Says he bought if from a shop in Bath, England. I found the web site and verified that it is the same 4001. I play golf not the bass guitar. It is like dejavu playing it (like riding a bike) but my wife wants it gone. I think it should go to someone who would hopefully enjoy it and put it to good use (Tunes).

I can’t believe he paid that much for a clean conscience! If he wanted to buy me off I could be bought for half of that. Andy Lewis at V & R Guitars said they were going to remove the ad. I know you are concerned about rip-offs on ebay as much as I am. I am just as scared having to deal with total strangers as well.

Thanks for my chance to respond!

That's a genuinely heart warming story, and thanks to all who helped Paul offer his thoughts on the matter.

Hopefully Paul will join us on here.....no offense Paul...we are kind of protective here , and it DID seem fishy as we've seen this kind of thing happen too many times.......but this sounds legit and he DOES sound like he should be a forumite!!

Indeed, welcome Paul....!!

Can we now look forward to Paul retelling the tale of how he sold one of the truly great Rickenbackers and how he regrets it to this day?

Endlessly!

Seriously though, I'd like to echo Chris's words and if you're about Paul, then welcome!

Well aren't I the idiot. She just sold for $1525.00 I would have gladly paid that for it and more. I lost track of this thread and didn't pay attention to the auctions end time after I saw that it just sold in the UK for over $4000.00 I figured the reserve would be more than I was willing to pay! (Kick self once more) Did it go to a forumite?

Aaaaaghhhhhhh!!!! I enquired about that at Vintage and Rare but thought £2500 was WAY too steep (even posted on the Forum about it). Can't believe it went for that; I just ignored it too! Duh!!!(note to self; PAY ATTENTION!!!!)
