It's a superb idea to honor the victims of 9/11 this way.

TOO CYNICAL FOR WORDS...

Post by jingle_jangle »

Here's the latest in Fender's "anything fer a buck" CS stuff...

Not one, but THREE CS 9/11 "tribute" Strats. Ugly, stupid, tacky. Who in his right mind could possibly see this as a tribute to anyone but Barnum and Mencken?

9/11 should be remembered, but NOT this way. This is just tasteless imho.

Man, Gibson does stuff like that "flagship" Explorer and you think it just can't get any worse. Then Fender does **** like this.

I'm not quite as offended after reading the whole story on Fender's website--at least they're not going to be some kind of mass-production.
I suppose it's for a good cause, but still.....just doesn't seem quite right.

On the brighter side, I believe that each one is a one-off. Thank god if they won't be turning up in my neighborhood.

From the manufacturer's web site:
"After going on brief display at a Fender event in California in mid-September, Eric Clapton will play the guitars during fall dates on his 2011 world tour, after which they will be donated to Sept 11, 2001, first-responder organizations."

Definitely sounds like a one-off.
I sincerely hope they've got enough class to keep it that way.

Very tacky way to get publicity. If it wanted to help these organizations, why didn't Fender just give each $50,000 instead of saddling them with guitars that may or may not raise some money.

Too thinly veiled for me. Fender is trying to get the "good company" image by riding the 9/11 Anniv. wave.

However, this may keep the feds from busting in and taking all of Fender's imported wood. Maybe Gibson should make a couple of 9/11 models and the feds will give them back their wood and guitars.

As if people don't feel bad enough about 9/11 already.

I'm a pretty big Fender fan, but I don't think this particular idea makes for one of their finer moments.

I didn't cast a vote as none of the choices really fit from my perspective; it's not the tackiest thing I've ever seen, and they are doing something constructive with the project; I'm just not all that comfortable using commercial products as "memorial" efforts.

I'm not really comfy with that last remark towards the company I work for.

I'm sure Fender did this with honourble intentions. That the end result is kitschy rubbish is a matter of taste.

Sorry about that--guess I was channeling Ed Roman for a second. (ever had a joke fall flat? Happens to me more often than not)

For the record, I'm still trying to convince Missus that I need an SG in the collection, just to keep things balanced.
