Well... they
were Punk. Punk wasn't a genre: Patti Smith, Talking Heads, early Costello, and Television are prime examples of punk bands that didn't sound like the Ramones or Sex Pistols. Anywhere from '73 to '82 - That era was punk for "alternative" bands. That's why, to me, it seems ridiculous for people to say they was a "post-punk" revival a few years ago, when that was an era - Not a sound.
I think it's worth mentioning that they had Ric copies before they bought actual Rics (When they got signed); goes to show that they're not totally sacrilegious instruments.
