I did something similar a few years ago with a trashed '76 I picked up locally.. I called it my 4001/4000 conversion. I sold the bass to Paul W.

Well, that is sort of derailing this thread, but what the heck, I like 'em better than white in most cases. Here's a couple more I've got with black pickguards...

how much was the black pickguard, was it from pickguardian, and where did you get the black TRC? The combination of FG and black trim looks very nice, and i may want to try it on my 2010 4003 one day.

Yeah, Tony did the pickguard for me. The black TRC is just the original white TRC with a few coats of black gloss lacquer spraypaint, some white on the raised lettering by a simple dry brush technique, and a final two coats of clear gloss.

I'll try to do clips soon. It's sounding so good at rehearsal--I hate it when people say this, but here we go, it's "the perfect bass". I need to record some of the songs I wrote in my last band for posterity, so maybe I'll share those later.

Scott, it's my main, so I'll be very glad to bring it back to Missouri for you to check it out next time I visit.

Is it just vol/tone? I'd have at least gone with a 3 band layout, and perhaps one dummy knob.

It's just the 2-band EQ--there is no volume control or passive tone. The treble EQ pretty much replaces the tone control and I never use volume controls. The volume control that would have normally been there has been replaced with an equivalent resistor parallel to ground. The bass EQ apparently acts as an output gain as well (or so I'm told).

I used to have a 4-band EQ on a Ric (by Audere) and a 3-band EQ MM Stingray, but I much prefer this 2-band setup. It may just be how it is voiced but it's perfect for my needs. Lately I'm a big fan of the "less is more" approach.

+1,for the less is more approach! Altho i am enjoying the push pull VVTT options on the new bass,i tend to leave it set up with overall setting for most of my playing. (all controls full up,bridge pup full coil,front pickup tapped). Using the pickup selector then gives some big variations in tone at a flick of the wrist.

The original StingRay preamp is and always has been a favorite for its voicing. Yes, with active tone controls, a boost is a slight boost in gain as well as a boost in the particular frequency response. If you find you need onboard volume, you can always get an outboard passive volume pedal. When I gigged guitar, I had one between the output of my POD 2.0 and the direct box, and when I gigged the Welk show, I had one between the bass and the direct box, with the side tap on the direct box going to my stage monitor amp & speaker. That can actually be more useful than a volume knob, so you don't have to take any hands off when a slight adjustment is needed.

On bass, I used it like a steel guitar player, to take the front edge off the attack, so I could emulate a "bowing" sound when necessary. Looking forward to it.

I've done that on some songs with Rare Blend. Steve & Tammy and Alex Heist have seen me do so at RB's last gig in Baltimore a few years ago.
