325 Rounds?

Post by kieran campbell »

I have a 325c64 and use flats, love the feel, the sound.. not so much. To me it sounds to base'y' so Im all ways playing on the bridge pickup or adjusting the amp. Does anyone here have rounds or their 325? is there a drastic difference in sound/ tone?

here you can see John's Ric with rounds

I think you should try some rounds on it, Kieran. Funny you bring this up now because I just went to RIC rounds ( .012 gauge) on my V59 after using TI flats for more than a year since I got it. I found the warm, plunky tone charming, but somewhat limited for a lot of stuff I might want to try. The rounds bring a more "normal", brighter aspect to the tone. It's all good info. The flats are great for some songs but I'm digging the more versatile roundwound sound for now. They're fun, and bendier than the slightly stiff TIs.

Rounds have always sounded just kind of dead to me. I like them on bass though.

I think flats are essential for this guitar.

I've used the RIC Round Wound Nikl No. 95106, with the 12 "E", on my 325V63JG for about a decade and they sound and feel great. I hope to continue to use them. However, it looks like they are NOT listed on the RIC site boutique. I seem to recall John Hall remark that RIC may change them to be more consistant. I hope they are not going to discontinue or change them too much. I have a small stock just in case. I guess John Hall may have been referring to the fact that short scale RIC guitars are NOT necessarily shipped with these strings on them. My new 2008 1996, for example, had 'compressed' round wounds, with a 12 "E", on it when I received it from NCM.

If you like the feel of flats but want something brighter, try some 1/2 Rounds. I personally never cared for the sound of rounds on the 325s, but different strokes and all that.

I've been using D'Addario 1/2 Rounds for a while now on quite a few of my guitars--including my current Ric.

FYI. I just heard from the great people at RIC that they will continue to produce the short scale strings mentioned above but as another part number. They just aren't on the boutique, as of yet. However, the "compressed" RIC 12-string set WILL BE CHANGED. They will be not as compressed. So, grab up the remaining old sets that you can if you like them.

Hey DavyR,
Pick Of The Ricks has for sale the exact strings that RIC has now discontinued. The 'compressed' 6 & 12 string guitar sets with a 10 "E".
FYI.
