Tubes and Rics!

I did a post about it when I first got the amp. There was some work needed, so I documented it. I traded the amp and cab towards a 1966 Gibson EB2, though I did recently pick up a 1967 Bassman blackface head. Those 2x15 cabs weigh a ton!

I play my '74 4001 through a Marshall Major I couldn't agree more I love tubes.

I think a Marshall Major would be just about perfect. I rocked my '72 4001 through a 100W Marshall Super Lead for many years (hint: connect a patch cord between the normal and bright channels). It kicked some butt through a JBL 18 in a folded horn!

I bet the Major sounds about twice as good though.

I can get my hands on a 70's model Ampeg SVT head, which is in good condition.... It would match my newly acquired PN-115 and PN-210 Ampeg cabs.... Should I do it or not ????

I've used them just about exclusively since 1976, if you don't mind lugging you'll probably never go back to anything else, you might even want to get the matching SVT cab from back then, the combo is killer. I also had a Marshall Major eons ago, I liked it but it was no match for an SVT in fact I sold it to get my first one. I found the Major sounded a lot better for guitar (from a mile away), the tones just aren't set up for bass. I think the classic set up for a rock n roll band is SVT's and Marshalls.

I have tried the YBA 300, it is a monster of an amp. Simple eq and huge tube tone. Also surprisingly light. They list for $1550 plus tax CAD. Oh yeah, looks cool too if that matters to you( it does to me).

Had the chance to a/b a 300 against a 200. Very interesting, I actually ended up prefering the 200!

Hi all there.

Last week i purchased an used 4003 (2008) from a local music store.

As i tried the bass at the store i noticed the action was rather high, but the bass guy told me that their luthier had just set up the bass, so i guessed that their luthier is the classic guy thinking that ricks should be set up with a certain amount of relief just like other basses and so on ... so i planned to just buy the bass (sounds good) and adjust the neck by miself.

But once at home i noticed two things : 1) both the truss rods seems to be already overtightened 2) while on the E side there is some room to lower the action by lowering the bridge, the bridge on the G side is already at his maximum low, but as i said, the action is far from being low.

It's not that the bass is unplayable, but i'm afraid that the neck has some kind of problem, or maybe the truss rod is broken or is not working well.

It is possible (if needed) to change the truss rod with a new one without removing the fingerboard ?

I'd think that a Ric bass would sound awesome through any Ampeg tube bass amp, particularly an SVT or B-15.
