new 4003 in the house

Post by crimson_dynamo »

The Fed Ex guy came at the end of the day and I was so busy playing Yes and Rush songs last night to post a photo. It's a 2009 and I like it quite a lot. It certainly doesn't the mojo that my friends '72 4001 had,but I had to give that back. Only thing is, I'm getting a lot of 60 cycle hum, might have to check the grounding on this beastie. It's a lot fun fun, though. This bass seems to have a lot more notes in it than some of my others.

Thanks, I'm going to leave it stock for now, but down the line I may try adding a toaster in the neck and maybe going for the 1/2" placement. I'm much more of a McCartney guy, but right now I'm having fun unleashing my inner Geddy. The 15 year old in my brain is totally cranked up about it!

Congrats on the nice lookin' bass!

As for putting a pickup at the 1/2 inch position, be aware that you'll have to remove some wood to get it there...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

..and the newer ones, like yours, has less wood there then in the past, putting the cavity closer to the edge of the body.

Putting a new RI toaster in there will make a difference, although you'll lose the adjustable pole feature. However, I haven't noticed too many, if any, string to string balance issues and I have toasters on all three of my Rick basses. The clarity of a toaster is really nice and thick. I'm not sure the tonal difference of 1" vs 1/2" is worth the potential risk of developing problems from wood removal in that area.

As for the hum, is it constant or dependent on touching/not touching the strings? One big culprit is dimmer switches. Any lights on that are on a dimmer can cause this. The hum is at its worst when the dimmer is anywhere between min (but on) and max, but still bothersome at any setting. Be aware that dimmer switches in any part of the house could be the culprit. I have dimmers in my downstairs bathroom and in the diningroom. The diningroom dimmer wreaks havoc on my upstairs music room, but the downstairs bathroom dimmer does not.

So, get investigative and shut off any dimmers!

I too, find the toaster pickup to have excellent string to string balance; every one I have ever heard is the same. 8)
