Lemmy is actually a very good player, I have stuff where he is very articulate and plays fast runs, I think his playing has just evolved to the style he has now, it works for Motorhead.
Absolutely. He's also responsible for some of my favourite bass solos, e.g. "Keep Us On The Road". Lemmy was my first conscious introduction to all things Rickenbacker (I'm sure Macca was my first subconscious!), and as Bert says was in his earlier days very melodic. Space Ritual is a "driving, melodic bass" tour de force IMO. Ironically I didn't realise Squire (my other favourite Ric player) played Rics until a few years after I started playing them; I came to him because he played them rather than the other way round.

I can second that. Last motorhead concert I was (heerhugowaard holland) we stood on the balcony (as far away as posible from the stage/PA). It was a somewhat strange sensation to feel your trousers shaking without having the same sensation level from your ears. But I'm allready a bit deaf from having played too loud when I was younger and I'm glad I wore ear protection. I still want to be able to play an instrument in a band when I'm Lemmy's age.

The bass of Lemmy's that RIC had was an unmodified 4001S or RM1999.
It was a 4000 that Lemmy modified with Gibson Thunderbird pickups, and is the one he played in Hawkwind after the Hopf bass got stolen.
