Welcome ! Who's Deep Purple? By the Way which ones Purple? Naah just don't sound right somehow?

You will find this list has a bunch of musical tastes and all of them quite good!

I too am a Big fan of Yes, Floyd, Rush, and yeah the Purple machine to name a few. I am fairly new myself to this list and joined to see if anyone had any ideas to help me convert my new 4003 to a 5 string bass.

Boy did they! there are a few of these guy's who were working on doing it, at that time, and a few who had already done it!
And I thought I was an original!

Check out some of the older threads in here and use the search page to find all kinds of great info on sounds and equipment suggestions.

I use a GK 700 with the 4-10's and a 15 sub. Only went with the 15 because of the 5 string conversion this set up is the best I have ever owned and wow does it shake the house!

It certainly is hard to figure out which Jeff one is refering to sometimes!

And AFAIK, you are the only Ronn.

Well, so much for the name games. What amps seem to work best with Rick's? I auditioned mine through an Ampeg SVT-3, although I currently have an Eden WT-400 and would part with it if I can find something else that I like better. I seem to like the "Old School" types of amps better such as Ampeg. I'm currently also considering a used Sunn 300T if the price is right.

I play mine through a 1969 Ampeg B-25, not the loudest Valve amp I've played through, but the tone, and the twin channels more than make up for that. It's one of the nicest valve amps I've used to date.

I'm also looking forward to auditioning the new 200W Yorkville all valve amp really soon. If it wern't for the steep price tag I'd consider going back to Orange again.

old school amps are dirtier and warmer ... new school amps are cleaner and have more overhead ... These days I use an ampeg b2r with 10" speakers ...

I am sold on 4X10's if you go 5 string with the added bass string you may want the 15 sub. Any head that has enough juice to shake the floor is good! If you want to try something new please check out Carvin amp's & equipment I see they have some unique high powered amps nowadays. I have been curious about trying one or two?

I literally grew up on Marshall 4x12's in the UK, so far I've not found anything that gives me the same balance of punch and low end as a 12".

I've used 15's and 18's as well, but still find the 12's to be my favourites. Currently I'm using Emenince Kappa Pro's and I'm very impressed with their performance.

Eminence Kappa Pro's are also used in Avatar cabinets, although mine has the Delta model.

My 4x12 is an Avatar, probably the best kept secret in Cabinet manufacturing. Great performance, fantastic service from Dave, and a good price.

I'm considering adding a 1x15 later once I get my chops back and decide to play out every once in a while. Right now, my current rig is an Eden WT-400, Avatar Delta 2x10" and the Rick. I'm debating whether or not to sell my American Standard J-Bass since I like the Rick tones so much.

Ron, take a look at Dave's new 2x12, really nice low end, as good as the 1x15. I may up adding this to my 4x12 and use it for smaller gigs on it's own.

Hey Ron, welcome and God bless your wife and family. I sold my jazz and 2 precisions after getting my 4003 FG. I have short fingers too, but the more consistent width of the 4003 seems to work well for me. It's the only long scale bass I play and enjoy.

And you are right on about the variety of tones from the 4003, definitely more varied and colorful than my old MIA j bass. And the power...yeah!

Depending on the venue, I play mine through an Ampeg B100R (100 watts) or an Ashdown MAG 300, both combos with 15" speakers. I love to thump!
