painful to see

This guy keeps posting this for sale. It's so hard to see a Ric bass in this sad state, but it would take some serious fortitude to restore this.

If it's this one:

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/msg/2647428927.html

...it's worth less than half that. I don't see any jackplate, either...

But, if structurally sound, it is still restorable.

that's the one. I told him exactly that: if he ever just wants to get it off his hands, I'd give him $400 for it. But I wouldn't really even want to get involved in that big of a project. I bet he thought he was going to restore it at one point as well.

Really? What i see is a 70's body,intact,but not beat up,that needs refinishing,but otherwise looks ok. For a model like this,with the 3 piece neck-through, $800 seems not that bad...$400 WOULD be a steal.....IMO.

I have to respectfully disagree. Think about how much money in parts that thing is going to need (a bare minimum of $600 for hardware, pickups, and plexi), not to mention plenty of unknowns about the neck and frets. Once you've put in around $1400 or $1500 you're guaranteed not to recoup at least part of your investment if not an even larger chunk of it... and yes, these are instruments not stocks or bonds, but why waste your money if you don't have to? You may love it today and tire of it tomorrow; it happens to a lot of people. This is the same reason why people are so cautionary about modding: a lot of people who have less experience with modding will do something irreversible, regret it, and sell the instrument at a loss. Remember that minty 4001S that got TalkBass all heated up when someone routed space for new pickups? I think the resulting bass was neat, but the guy who did that work had to take quite a big loss on it when he decided he didn't want the instrument a month later.

It's not wrong necessarily to take a big loss, it's just something a lot of people wouldn't want to do, because they value money more than the experience they might get from restoring or modding and then selling something. Sometimes it's worth it though... I doubt my 4001FL is worth any more than I paid for it after what I have put in, but it's a great bass so it's a moot point. I guess if you really like something, any amount of money "wasted" could seem justifiable.

You can spend money on drugs, whiskey, and women, or you can spend your money on Ricks. I spend it on RIcks. Okay, whiskey too.

The real question is why haven't you done that yet, and I would also require that you wire it as one giant humbucker of muddy doom.
