The only humbucker is in the neck. The bridge is a single coil.
Just to clear things out when it comes to the teles. We're talking about threee different ones. Blonde Tele Custom (SC/HB) in 1980, black Tele Custom (SC/HB) seen in footage from 84-85 and then again in 2008, and then the blonde Thinline (as seen in the Raleigh '85 show on one or two songs). The Thinline seems to be a '72 version, accordingly with two Wide Range Humbuckers. The bridge is accordingly also a humbucker on that one.
As regards jangle, well mid-position on a Tele Custom certainly can jangle... Check this out:

The picture you posted is from '81, or so, before REM had recorded anything besides Radio Free Europe/Sitting Still. He no longer owns that Tele, because it was stolen, which led to him buying the 360. Because we don't know what that live show sounded like, we don't know "how he got that sound." It is possible that the toggle switch was reversed, as well: Have you ever played a Strat where the bridge setting gave you the neck instead? That's just one theory - One that will never be tested because I have yet to hear a boot from that era that didn't have Ric on it.
I guess the story has been that he got the Rick in '81, right? (When the blonde Tele Custom was stolen etc) That would mean there are several recordings from when he still used the Tele (including the much bootlegged October 4, 1980 show and the Wuxtry rehearshal session tape from June 6. Also, the very first existing recording is (probably) from May 30, 1980 which is only two weeks after the pictures posted above. There it seems more than likely that we hear the blonde Tele Custom. So not sure what "we don't know what a show from that era sounded like" is supposed to mean. Here's one track from May 30, 1980 for your enjoyment:

Guess that sounds like a Tele to me. Pickup position? No idea, but hardly neck...
